A pair of streaking teams will collide Tuesday evening at Arthur J. Weiss Gymnasium as the Clearfield Lady Bisons play host to Curwensville in the Gant Daily Game of the Week. Junior varsity action tips-off at 6 p.m., with varsity action to follow.
Clearfield (13-7) entertains the Lady Tide as the teams clash for the third time this season. Curwensville earned a 54-51 victory at Patton Hall on Dec. 20. Then, Clearfield scored a 58-46 victory over Curwensville just 10 days later in the consolation game of the Penns Manor Tournament.
Clearfield rides a 3-game winning streak into the game and is playing its best basketball of the season. The Lady Bisons have been downright ruthless on defense while being prolific on offense. In Saturday\’s win over DuBois Central, the Lady Bisons defense created havoc by forcing the Lady Cardinals into 28 turnovers. On the other end of the floor, Juliana Howell enjoyed a big night with 28 points.
The Lady Bisons have tremendously stepped up their performance in the half court. Four-year letterwinner and center Elizabeth Sopic has been a force on both ends of the floor. Her rebounding and ability to stay out of foul trouble have been a benefit to the Bisons all season long. Plus, her defense and transition play into offense have allowed the Lady Bisons to benefit on the perimeter as well.
As teams concentrate on Sopic, Clearfield\’s guard play have been fantastic. Howell, Collins and Jordan – a trio of speedsters – along with forwards Mallory Janocko and Annie Janocko have been lethal on offense. Clearfield will not only put up the 3-point shot, but will also go for mid- and long-range jumpers with its forwards and guards.
The Lady Tide meanwhile have developed into quite a force. Curwensville won the Allegheny Mountain League South crown with a 56-38 win over Ridgway on Saturday and will play Elk County Catholic this Saturday at DuBois Middle School for the AML crown.
In that win over Ridgway, Danielle Struble led the way with 26 points and 10 rebounds. Jackie White added 14 points and 12 rebounds into the mix.
Plus, the Lady Tide have set a new season record for wins with 18 under head coach Vic Gearhart. Curwensville is 18-4 on the season.
Curwensville enters the game riding a four-game win streak.
