No week is a slow week, and this was no exception. The News Team was busy this week, following leads and putting our ears to the ground.
The last week saw Discovery House closed down in Pike Township due to a judicial order, a fight broke out at an area prison, and an armed robber waived his hearing.
An accomplice in the case of Kelly Jo Elliott pleaded guilty, a $1 million grant was issued to help clean up the brownfield site where Sunnyside Ethanol LLC plans to built Pennsylvania’s first ethanol plant in Curwensville, and GantDaily attempted to find out what happened to a local doctor. A fight at a local correctional institution was also covered.
This week also saw the combined efforts of GantDaily, wOK!w and The Courier-Express/Tri-County Sunday in tackling an alleged Sunshine Act violation.

Sunnyside Ethanol Getting Closer, $1 Million Grant Received to Aid in Clean Up of Former Howe’s Leather Site
CLEARFIELD – Sunnyside Ethanol LLC is getting closer to breaking ground on their Curwensville site. According to Rob Swales, executive director of the Clearfield County Industrial Development Authority, a $1 million Department of Community and Economic Development grant was issued to assist in the clean up of the former Howe’s Leather Leather Co., the future site of Sunnyside’s proposed ethanol plant.

Clearfield Borough Corrects Actions, Fire Halls for Sale Again
CLEARFIELD – An alleged violation of the Pennsylvania Sunshine Act was cured at a special meeting of Clearfield Borough Council Thursday night.
The law, also known as the Pennsylvania Meetings Act, was called into question by Dawn Walls of GantDaily.com, Amanda Thompson of wOK!w and Kimberly Finnigan of The Courier-Express/Tri-County Sunday.

Basketball Game Argument Breaks out at Moshannon Valley Correctional Center
PHILIPSBURG – Tuesday afternoon, GantDaily learned of an incident at the Moshannon Valley Correctional Center in Philipsburg.

Hospital Changes Cancer Center Staff
CLEARFIELD – After hearing from a reader over the weekend, GantDaily contacted Clearfield Hospital Monday morning with questions regarding whether Dr. Amer Khouri was still an employee at the hospital.
GantDaily asked the hospital whether there was a release on why Khouri left, what is being done until a replacement is found, and any other helpful information on the issue.

Philipsburg Man Waives Right to Hearings on Burglary Charges
CLEARFIELD – A 21-year-old man accused of robbing two convenience stores at gunpoint waived his right to preliminary hearings on Wednesday.
Michael W. Welder Jr. is accused of two counts of robbery, four counts of criminal conspiracy, two counts of theft by unlawful taking, two counts of receiving stolen property, and two counts of recklessly endangering another person.

PA Man Pleads Guilty as an Accessory in Elliott Murder Case
WHEELING, WEST VIRGINIA – A 30-year-old Freedom, Pennsylvania resident entered a plea of guilt on Friday in United States District Court before Judge Frederick P. Stamp Jr. for his role the Kelly Jo Elliott murder case.
United States Attorney Sharon L. Potter announced that John Deutsch entered a plea of guilty to one count of an information charging him with accessory after the fact. According to the release, specifically Deutsch knowing that Eugene Talik Jr. had committed interstate domestic violence and prevented Talik’s apprehension, trial and punishment from May 25, 2006 to June of 2006.

Brookville Police Link Minnesota Man to Quality Inn Fire
BROOKVILLE – State police have not released any information as of posting time, but Brookville Borough Police say they know who started a Jan. 23 fire at the Quality Inn in DuBois. They said the same man flooded the Super 8 Motel in Brookville before leaving to start the DuBois fire.
