The new year is certainly coming in like a lion when it comes to news in Clearfield County.
For the first time, the GantDaily Weekly Reload includes two sports stories, both of which are about swimming. That’s because a record at Brockway’s pool was broken and a Clearfield swimmer and a DuBois swimmer tied while swimming in Clearfield (not a common occurrence).
But, other areas were not to be outdone, the courts provided two of our Top 10 (or so) this week, and Boggs Township took center stage once again.

Sowa Pleads Guilty to Assaulting a Sandy Township Police Officer, Other Charges
CLEARFIELD – A DuBois man arrested in June pleaded guilty on Monday to assaulting and attempting to disarm a Sandy Township police officer and other related charges.
Derek M. Sowa, 27, was sentenced to 14 months to three years in state prison for the assault.

Free Internet Access for Boggs Township
WEST DECATUR – More and more, municipalities are faced with filling out applications and uploading information to state agencies online. In addition, engineers, solicitors and others request to communicate via e-mail, so many municipalities are finding themselves spending a lot of time online due to older dial-up connections.
A few municipalities in Clearfield County are on high-speed access, and a few even have their own Web sites, but one municipality has found a way to have its Internet access for free and profit from the agreement for it at the same time.
Boggs Township signed an agreement with Comcast through 2025 that allows the township to receive free high-speed cable Internet access for free for the length of the contract. The savings to the township is about $95 per month or about $1,200 per year.

Man Accused of Harassing Boggs Secretary
WEST DECATUR – A Boggs Township man will find himself in court once again for actions against those affiliated with the municipality.
Frank Norris is accused of calling Boggs Township Secretary Denise Dobo lewd names following the December meeting of the Boggs Township Supervisors.

Double Guilty Plea for Women Who Stole from DuFast
CLEARFIELD – Two women entered guilty pleas to charges that they bilked DuFast Transit Authority in DuBois out of about $420,000 in state and federal funds.
Thirty-seven-year-old Lauri L. Ferraro, formerly of DuBois and now living in Florida, and 48-year-old Elaine Kost of DuBois were set to begin a two-week trial before Clearfield County Judge Paul E. Cherry on Monday, but at about 9:30 a.m., Clearfield County District Attorney William A. Shaw Jr. said the women had entered what is called an open plea in the cases, the same effect that would have been obtained had the women went through with their scheduled jury trial.

DuBois City Council, Police Force Agree on Collective Bargaining Agreement
DUBOIS – The DuBois City Police force will be under contract for four more years thanks to a collective bargaining agreement.
City council authorized John “Herm” Suplizio, city mayor and acting city manager, to sign the collective bargaining agreement at Monday night’s regular city council meeting.

Clearfield Boys Shatter Pool Record
BROOKVILLE – Clearfield’s boys’ open 200 medley relay team shattered a Brookville pool record last night in dual meet competition. The relay team with Brandon Boyer, Mark Krchnak, Logan Shirey and Shay Flanagan posted a 1:44.3 time surpassing the previous mark of 1:46.8 to win the event.

Swimmers Tie in Monday Meet
CLEARFIELD – It’s not a common occurrence, but it happened Monday at a swim meet between the Clearfield Bisons and the DuBois Beavers, there was a tie.
Clearfield’s Brandon Boyer and Matthew Bojalad from DuBois finished their race at Clearfield Area High School at the exact same time.

Landfill Application Process Starts with LMIP
BOGGS TOWNSHIP – The process of PA Waste LLC’s landfill permit application is just beginning.
The clock began on the 21-month timeline at 12:01 a.m. Friday, and local leaders had their first chance to hear about the project and voice preliminary concerns.

County Could be Future Home to Central Pennsylvania Zoo
CLEARFIELD – Could a zoo be on the horizon for Clearfield County? If recreation and tourism officials have their way, the county will be on the short list of possible sites.
As of now, the Central Pennsylvania Zoological Society is looking at places between Altoona and State College on Interstate 99 once it is completed, but, according to Lauren Albright of the society, “We have not ruled anything out.”
