HYDE — The Bison Wrestlers hosted a limping DuBois team, while the Beavers were without state qualifiers Nick Wykoff (112) and Ethan Swope (119). As a result, Clearfield had a 12-0 advantage heading into last night’s dual meet competion at Arthur J. Weiss Gymnasium. However, the Bisons were unable to capitalize, falling to the Beavers 37-28
\”With two forfeits, you‘re already up 12-0 going into the match,\” said head coach Jeff Aveni. \”We needed one or two big wins to win that match and we couldn’t get it. We kept giving up bonus points and they kept getting them.\”
DuBois owned an early 10-0 lead after a Sean Zimmerman (189) fall and a 11-2 major decision from Patrick Lydick at 215.
However, Sean Owen got Clearfield on the board at heavyweight.
Owen needed only 1:57 to get the fall and cut the DuBois lead to four.
At 103, Holden Lowe and T.J. Stanton went scoreless in the first period, but Lowe went to work using a pair of takedowns, an escape and two near fall points to earn a 7-1 decision.
Bisons Andrew Spicer and Cody Billotte won by forfeit at 112 and 119 pounds, respectively.
The back-to-back forfeits gave Clearfield a 21-10 advantage.
The 125-pound bout proved to be one of the most exciting of the evening, as Jeff Smallwood scrapped with DuBois’ David Whitaker.
Smallwood had a 5-4 lead at the end of two. In the third, Whitaker scored a pair of takedowns to regain control. However, Smallwood battled for a late, third period reversal to push the bout to overtime.
In overtime, Whitaker picked up the takedown and the 10-8 win.
The 130-pound bout featured a re-match between Anthony Schultz and Matt Zimmerman, the two wrestlers met in the consolations at Meadville’s Tool City Tournament.
At Meadville, Schultz pinned Zimmerman in 4:40. Schultz won round two, using two takedowns and an escape to defeat Zimmerman 5-1.
At 135, Nick Centra proved too much for Bison Anthony Moore to handle. Centra notched a 14-5 major decision over Moore.
DuBois received falls from Brian Hineman (3:23) and Billy Morrison (1:41) at 140 and 145 pounds, respectively.
Morrison’s fall gave DuBois a 29-24 lead with three bouts remaining.
Richie Queen kept any hopes of a Clearfield upset alive in his 152-pound bout.
Queen picked up near fall points in each of the three periods en route a 15-5 major decision over Justin McAninich.
At 160, Zach Lundgren scored a technical fall to extend the Beavers’ lead to six.
Even with (Zach) Lundgren’s win, an upset was manageable with a Bison fall, but Eric Lundgren had other plans for the 171-pound bout.
(Eric) Lundgren won by a 10-5 decision over Lee Zalno to secure the DuBois win.
\”\”We looked like a bunch of sophomores wrestling a bunch of seniors tonight,\” said Aveni of his team‘s performance. \”Our sophomores have over a month of experience wrestling some of the better competiton in the state and we’re not wrestling like we’ve done that. We’re still making the same mistakes we were making a month and a half ago\” … \”And, until we really begin to scrap for every point, not surrender points and go after every point we can get, this is as good as were going to be.\”
Clearfield will look to improve Saturday when the Bisons travel to State College. The match is set for 6:30 p.m.

Clearfield Notes:
According to Aveni, Lowe will continue to wrestle at 103 pounds for the Bisons. \”Holden is back to stay. He had some weight control problems. He got in the line-up at 119, and because of his weight management plan, which the PIAA enacted, we couldn’t wrestle at 119 at some points, because we had to make our certified weight for 103. Now, he’s back down, I expect him to stay the for the rest of the season.\”
