Meadville — Bison Sean Owen captured his first heavyweight title at Meadville’s Tool City Tournament last night.
Owen posted two falls and a decision en route his finals appearance where he met top-seeded Gabe Murtorff of Boiling Springs.
Heading into the championship bout, Murtorff held a perfect 20-0 record, while Owen was 17-3 on the season.
Early in the first, Murtorff shot in, but Owen hit a wizzer, tossing Murtorff to his back. Murtorff rolled through to escape the fall and return to the neutral position. Neither Owen nor Murtorff received points.
The first period ended dead-even at zero.
However, Owen went to work in the second, using a cradle to pick up two near fall points. Murtorff kicked out to notch an escape, making the score 2-1 at the end of two.
Owen continued to dominate, earning a third period reversal to secure a 4-2 win.
Although Clearfield had nine wrestlers alive in consolation action, sophomore, 125-pounder Jeff Smallwood was the Bisons only other placewinner.
After a quarter-final loss, Smallwood engineered a comeback, posting falls over John Ashe (Boiling Springs, 1:56) and Glen Sult (General McLane, 3:48).
William Palmer (St. Ignatius, OH) proved too much for Smallwood to handle, needing only five minutes to get the technical fall.
In his consolation championship bout, Smallwood met a familiar face, getting a re-match with Devin Miller (Iroquois), who beat Smallwood 9-3 in Friday night’s quarter-finals.
However, Miller won round two 10-5 and Smallwood placed sixth for the tournament.
At 145, Rich Queen didn’t make the medal stand, but earned the tournament’s quickest fall when he pinned Tim Mitcham (Maplewood) in 11 seconds.
Clearfield is back in action Tuesday night when the Bisons battle the Beavers at Arthur J. Weiss Gymnasium.
