KNOX — Mike Johnson and James Zimmerman scored 14 points apiece as the Clearfield Area High School boys basketball team overcame foul shooting woes to beat District 9 League rival DuBois 53-43 in the consolation game of the Keystone Tip-Off Tournament Saturday.
Johnson also had 10 rebounds, while Todd Hryn grabbed 12 missed shots and chipped in eight points for the Bisons, who outscored the Beavers 17-4 in opening up a 20-8 lead midway through the second quarter.
DuBois (0-2), which dug a hole with an eight-minute scoreless stretch, rebounded to trim its deficit to 25-22 by halftime and got the first two points of the third quarter before Clearfield (1-1) retaliated with nine consecutive points and led by at least six points the rest of the way.
The Beavers, who were led by John Hartzfeld\’s nine points and Brant Davis\’ eight, could have made it more interesting but couldn\’t capitalize when the Bisons missed eight of 11 free throws down the stretch.
Both teams struggled at the foul line, Clearfield making only six of 23 for 26.1 percent and DuBois sinking just 10 of 25 for 40 percent.
Defense was the key for coach Forrest Campman\’s Bisons, who created 31 turnovers, including 21 in the first half.
Zimmerman was named to the all-tournament team along with Emile Khoury of DuBois, Dan Ferringer of champion Keystone and Mike Supko and Matt Curtis of Philipsburg-Osceola.
Keystone\’s Kyle Rhoads was named the tourney\’s most valuable player. After scoring 25 points against DuBois, he iced the Panthers\’ 33-25 title game victory over P-O by hitting five of six free throws in the final 40 seconds to finish with 11 points in addition to seven rebounds and four blocked shots.
Ferringer led the Panthers with 14 points, netting a quartet of three-pointers to boost his tourney total to nine.
Supko\’s seven points led coach Matt Barnes\’ Mounties, who trailed only 22-21 after three quarters but made just two of 15 shots in the last eight minutes. P-O was 10-for-47 (21.3 percent) for the game. Keystone wasn\’t much better against the Mountie zone at 14-for-57 (24.6 percent).
