DUBOIS – Pushing four runs across in the top half of the tenth inning, the Curwensville Golden Tide baseball team edged DuBois Central Catholic on Thursday, in DuBois, 12-11.
It was win number six on the year against 12 losses for Curwensville, with one game remaining.
Tide head coach Denny Johns spoke afterwards about the win, “I am glad the guys hung in there and got the win. Our hitting was very good tonight. It has been off and on all year, but tonight we swung the bats well.”
Curwensville did, however, commit eight errors on the afternoon, which Johns spoke about, “Defensively we could have made it much easier on ourselves and probably could have won the game earlier without the number of errors we made.”
DuBois Central Catholic had a 2-1 lead after three innings and a 4-2 margin after four, but things were a long way from being settled.
The Tide picked up one run in the fifth inning and three more tallies in the top half of the sixth to surge ahead 6-5 after six frames.
Tide shortstop Tanner Elensky had a one out, RBI double in the sixth to highlight the inning for Curwensville.
The Cardinals once again knotted the score, 6-6, with a run in their half of the seventh inning sending the game into extra innings.
Boone McGary singled for the Tide with two outs in the top of the eighth, which was followed by a Jesse Zorger home run to push Curwensville back out in front 8-6.
It wasn’t very long before DCC tied things up again with two runs in the bottom of the eighth at 8-8.
In the top of the tenth Curwensville had their biggest inning of the day, scoring four times.
Elensky and Kyle Bloom picked up back to back walks to lead off the inning, and with no outs McGary reached base on an infield single between third and shortstop to load the bases for Curwensville.
Zorger delivered again for the Tide, as the senior designated hitter stroked a double down the left field line driving home both Elensky and Bloom.
On the afternoon Zorger drove in five runs while collecting three hits.
Curwensville was still in business with runners on second and third and just one out when Hunter McCracken lined a single to right field to drive in two more teammates in McGary and Zorger.
DCC, though, wouldn’t go away quietly as it rallied, although one run short, for three runs in the bottom of the tenth inning, only to lose 12-11.
Brett Gardner picked up his first win of the season on the mound for Curwensville, giving up just three earned runs in nine innings of work.
Johns spoke about his sophomore hurler, “Brett (Gardner) continues to do the job for us on the mound. He has had two quality starts the last two times out and it was nice to see him get the win today”
McGary had a big day for Curwensville with four hits while Elensky, Stiles and McCracken all had two.
The Cardinals were paced by Mark Walker who had three hits and Aaron Herzing, Cody Gulvas, Pat Sayers and Alex Allender with two apiece.
DCC defeated the Tide in the first game of the year, at Curwensville, 8-5.
The Golden Tide wrap up the 2012 season with a road trip to Brockway on Saturday for a 1:30 pm game with the Rovers. Curwensville knocked off Brockway earlier this year, 8-7.
