TYRONE – Mikayla Ebeling had three hits and drove in three runs while Lucy Kovalick had a pair of singles and four RBIs as the Clearfield Area High School softball team climbed to .500 with a 13-3 win over Tyrone Wednesday afternoon.
The Mountain League Allegheny Division game was much closer than the score indicates, for the Lady Bisons didn’t pull away until the last two innings for their fifth victory in their last six games and a 7-7 record.
Through five innings, Ashley Tepsic and the Lady Eagles had the upper hand on Rachel Hoffman and the Lady Bisons, 3-2.
Kovalick clutched up for the game-winning hit in the sixth, rapping her second hit to plate Melinda Owens and Hoffman after they singled and moved up on a passed ball.
Later, Ebeling and Andrea Butler chipped in with two-run singles to give Hoffman an 8-3 cushion.
That’s all the sophomore right-hander needed as she kept the Lady Eagles off the scoreboard over the last five frames and finished with a three-hitter. Hoffman struck out nine and walked three in her fourth win.
Clearfield made it a rout in the seventh with B.J. Bowman belting a double and Tristan Lewis hammering a triple for RBIs and Kovalick, Ebeling and Megan Vanderburgh adding run-scoring singles.
Butler walked and scored on Hoffman’s groundout in the first inning, but the Lady Bisons were stymied by Tepsic until Bowman crunched a triple for their first hit in the fourth inning. She touched home plate on Kovalick’s groundout.
Tyrone (1-14) had matched Clearfield’s run in the first inning and took the lead with two runs in the second before Hoffman settled down.
Bowman, who is working on a nine-game hitting streak, and Becca Byerly each had two of the Lady Bisons’ 14 safeties.
Hoffman was able to extend her hitting streak to 13 games.
Clearfield plays its third road game in four days against Philipsburg-Osceola Friday.
