CURWENSVILLE – Ridgway High School pitcher Josh Mitchell threw a complete game three-hitter at Curwensville Wednesday as the Elkers picked up a 9-1 win over the Golden Tide.
Mitchell kept the Tide off stride with a total of 14 strikeouts and Curwensville head coach Denny Johns was one of many that Mitchell impressed on the Tide’s diamond, “We knew that coming into this game that Mitchell was good, but today he certainly was better than advertised. He was in complete control from start to finish.”
The Tide picked up its only run of the game in the bottom of the first when Brett Gardner was hit by a pitch from Mitchell, which was followed by an infield single from Jesse Zorger, giving the Tide runners on first and second.
With two outs, catcher Boone McGary picked up a RBI single to right field as Gardner raced home for Curwensville to knot the score at 1-1 after the first inning.
The Tide kept the game close, trailing only 3-1 going into the top of the sixth inning when the Elkers added a five spot to put the game away.
Kyle Bloom made his first ever appearance on the mound for the Tide, and Johns liked what he saw, “If there was one bright spot this afternoon it was the effort by Kyle Bloom. For his first appearance on the mound in varsity action he actually threw the ball fairly well.”
Mitchell, Josh Linderberger and Luke Pierce all had two hits apiece for Ridgway.
Tanner Elensky had the only extra base hit for the Tide, a double.
Despite the 0-5 start for Curwensville, Johns remains positive and hopes his squad can too, “We definitely need to stay positive as a team. We just have to keep working hard and really need that first win to develop some confidence. It is frustrating for all of us, but we believe that better things are ahead for this team.”
The Golden Tide have a week off to re-group before going on the road to Kane Wednesday. That contest versus the Wolves starts at 4:15 pm.
