Clearfield County residents did get some good news this week with the announcement of prescription drug help. Residents in Osceola Mills lost a member of their borough council and the borough’s secretary.
Progress was made in the Sandy/DuBois sewer issue. People who are accused of stealing from a local grocery store had court dates, and a local municipality was ordered to reinstate a dismissed police officer.
Rendell did announce some good news this week with healthcare news for children in Pennsylvania. An area airport added new spring flights also.

Snow Storm Response Hampered by Problems in Preparation, Communication and Execution Says Rendell Team
HARRISBURG – The inadequate response to last week’s statewide winter storm began with poor planning and execution by PennDOT in some key counties, but was further hampered by breakdowns in the Commonwealth’s emergency response operations, according to a preliminary review announced by Gov. Edward G. Rendell’s senior staff.

Clearfield County Launches Prescription Drug Discount Card for All Residents
CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield County Commissioners will launch a drug discount program beginning March 1 to help county residents cope with the high price of prescription drugs. The county is making free prescription drug discount cards available under a program sponsored by the National Association of Counties that offers average savings of 20 percent off the retail price of commonly prescribed drugs.

Cautious Travel Urged Even After I-80 Re-Opened
HARRISBURG – At about 10:30 p.m., Gov. Edward G. Rendell announced that Interstate 80 in Clearfield County re-opened in both directions.
The roadway had been closed between exits 111 and 120 from about 5:30 p.m. due to hazardous winter weather.

Rendell Says Final Approval Received to Expand CHIP to Cover All Kids; Urges Parents to Apply Now
HARRISBURG – Gov. Edward G. Rendell said the final piece of his “Cover All Kids” proposal to expand Pennsylvania’s Children’s Health Insurance Program has been approved by the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, continuing Pennsylvania’s leadership in providing access to affordable health insurance for all uninsured children and teens, up to age 19.

Sandy Township Pays DuBois $1.7 Million
DUBOIS – DuBois City has been paid for arrearages owed by Sandy Township.
Dick Castonguay, Sandy Township manager, said he and Chairman Brady LaBorde delivered a check for $1,748,818.25 to DuBois City on Friday, money a court decision ruled was owed to the city for the time period when the township paid less than $6.92 per 1,000 gallons of wastewater that was treated by the city.

Mignot Resigns From Osceola Mills Borough Council
OSCEOLA MILLS – Osceola Mills Borough Council accepted the resignation of former council-member Betsy Mignot on Monday night.
Mignot tendered her resignation through a letter to council. In her letter Mignot cited her health as one of her concerns for resigning. Mignot also noted that after what she saw at a Feb. 12 emergency meeting of council, she felt uncomfortable sitting at the table because she feared what some people might do.

Osceola Mills Borough Releases Secretary/Treasurer
OSCEOLA MILLS – The deciding vote to terminate a borough employee came down to the mayor at Monday’s meeting of the Osceola Mills Borough Council.
After a long silence, a motion to terminate Mary Askey as the secretary/treasurer for the borough was finally seconded. The motion was made after an executive session held during the meeting to discuss personel.

Arbitrator Rules to Reinstate Houser to Lawrence Township Police Department
CLEARFIELD – A Clearfield native dismissed from the Lawrence Township Police in 2005 may wind up back on the force.
According to Lawrence Township Solicitor James Naddeo, an arbitrator ruled on Feb. 16 that the township must reinstate Houser to full-time status. Naddeo said that Houser was not awarded back-pay for his time away from the force.

People Accused of Stealing from J.G. Food Warehouse Waive Hearings
CLEARFIELD – Four people alleged to have taken food, tobacco and other items from J.G. Food Warehouse waived their rights to preliminary hearings on Wednesday.
Anthony Freyer, 21 of Clearfield is charged with theft by unlawful taking and related charges. Brian Scott Leigey, 26, of Clearfield and Jeffrey Ryan Shipley, 26 of Clearfield are both charged with solicitation, theft by unlawful taking and related charges. Heather Lee Watkins, 21 of Clearfield is charged with theft by unlawful taking and retail theft.
