CLEARFIELD – Patrons of the Clearfield and Punxsutawney Burger Kings can support Clearfield Hospital Hospice during fundraising events planned at the restaurants.
On Monday, Feb. 26, from 4-8 p.m., the Burger Kings in Clearfield and Punxsutawney will donate 20 percent of what is sold to hospice.
Two additional fundraising nights will be held at the Clearfield restaurant on Monday, March 26, and Monday, April 30, from 4-8 p.m.
Hospice and RSVP volunteers will be on hand during the events to collect patrons’ receipts and distribute information about hospice, a program that provides personal care and support for terminally ill persons and their families.
Money raised will help local patients by providing extra aide care and needed items not covered by insurance, according to Dana Wilson, hospice volunteer coordinator.
Punxsutawney Burger King general manager Bridget Swatsworth is spearheading the fundraisers in memory of her late grandmother, Joyce Swatsworth of Curwensville, who was a hospice patient for four months before she passed away in January.
“The nurses who cared for my grandmother were wonderful, and helped our family through a difficult time. My grandmother wanted to be at home during her illness – not in a hospital. Hospice helped her stay at home. Hosting these events is our way of showing appreciation for hospice,” Bridget Swatsworth said.
Gail Makin, R.N., one of the hospice nurses who cared for Mrs. Swatsworth, said she admired Mrs. Swatsworth’s courage and upbeat personality, and the family’s devotion.
“Her family was instrumental in her care. They did everything they could to make sure she was able to remain at home and were with her all the time. They were incredible,” Ms. Makin said.
Mrs. Swatsworth’s son, Jeff, said hospice not only cared for his mother’s physical needs, but also provided emotional support.
“The nurses gave us encouragement, especially during times when we thought we couldn’t go on. They were more than nurses; they were motivators. They were a big help, and were very kind to my mother,” Mr. Swatsworth said.
Ms. Wilson thanked Bridget Swatsworth, Gathagan Investment Co. (owner of the Burger Kings), Nicky Leigey, operations manager, and the restaurant staff for organizing the fundraisers.
“Their support of hospice means a great deal to us. I encourage the public to attend all of the fundraising nights planned and help this worthy cause,” she stated.
