WOODSTOCK, VIRGINIA – The Curwensville Golden Tide baseball team traveled to Woodstock, Virginia on Saturday to compete in the “Harry Combs Classic.”
The Tide gave up 17 runs over the middle two innings of a five-inning game that saw Broadway High School from Virginia come up with an 18-4 victory.
Curwensville had taken a 3-1 lead after two complete innings before Broadway lit up the scoreboard with eight runs in the top of the third and nine more in their half of the fourth.
Jesse Zorger scored the first of three runs for the Tide in the bottom half of the second inning with a double and then scored on a single to center field by Kyle Bloom.
Alex Holland would then triple to left center field with two outs that drove home Kyle Bloom. Holland would then score on an error on the relay throw.
Curwensville would add one more run in the bottom of the third as Brett Gardner reached base on a single.
Boone McGary then drew a walk, giving the Tide runners on first and second with one out.
Jesse Zorger would ground into a fielder’s choice with Gardner being cut down at third base on the play.
Golden Tide junior center fielder Brad Coudriet singled to left center field bringing McGary home with the Tide’s final score.
The Tide did have three extra base hits during the contest as Holland had a triple and Munchak and Zorger each had a double.
Tristan Bailey had five RBI’s for Broadway while Zane Hostettler and Brad Ritchie each had three hits.
Curwensville coach Denny Johns spoke afterwards, “The game got away from us when they (Broadway) started to swing the bats very effectively. They just kept putting the ball in play and found a lot of gaps on their hits.”
Johns continued, “Offensively we did swing the bats well. Even on some of our outs we hit the ball well, so I was happy to see that.”
With the loss the Golden Tide dropped to 0-2 on the year with another game against Central High School, also of Virginia, in the consolation game on Saturday.
The Tide will also play on Monday afternoon at 4:15 pm when they entertain Brookville at home.
