STATE COLLEGE – A widespread winter storm is on its way to Central Pennsylvania.
According to the National Weather Service, a storm system developing over Oklahoma Monday and is expected to track into the Ohio Valley on Tuesday before moving toward New England.
This is expected to result in the first widespread winter storm for most of Central Pennsylvania this season.
A mix of wintry precipitation is likely across Southern and Central Pennsylvania with heavy snow in the Northern Tier.
As a result, a Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday afternoon.
A Winter Storm Watch means there is a potential for significant snow or ice accumulation that may impact travel. The exact path of this storm system is uncertain. However, if heavy snow or ice become imminent, a Winter Storm Warning will be issued.
A developing winter storm will spread snow into Pennsylvania during the day Tuesday. The snow will likely change to sleet south of Interstate 80 on Tuesday night and last through early Wednesday.
A period of freezing rain is also possible in the lower Susquehanna Valley on Wednesday. For areas north of I-80, the precipitation is likely to remain all snow.
The National Weather Service expects the storm to taper off during the day Wednesday with snowfall amounts of 6 to 12 inches possible across Northern Pennsylvania. Snowfall amounts across Southern Pennsylvania will likely be somewhat lower due to the expected change to sleet and pehaps some freezing rain.
