DUBOIS – The DuBois Area School District Board of Directors took the first step in the search for a new superintendent on Wednesday night.
The board needs to find a replacement for current Superintendent Sharon Kirk. Kirk gave her notice of retirement at the board’s reorganization meeting, stating that she would be done in January 2008.
Representatives from two different organizations who specialize in helping districts find superintendents gave presentations to the board on Wednesday. During their presentations it was revealed that the board will search for an assistant superintendent. That person is scheduled to ultimately take over for Kirk when she leaves.
The board ultimately went with Dr. Lanny Ross and Dr. David Smith. According to Ross, his firm has helped Clearfield, Mo Valley, two districts in Somerset County and others as well.
“If you make the wrong decision now, you’ll pay for it for four or five years,” said Ross during his presentation.
Ross’s firm will cost the district about $2,000, as opposed to about $7,500 from Curtis Rose of the Pennsylvania School Board Association. Ross said that the ultimate decision is up to the board, though he will tell them how he has gone about things in the past.
Both Ross and Rose agreed that the district needed to begin their search as soon as possible. Both also agreed with the proper fit of a district and potential superintendent.
