COOPER TOWNSHIP – No injuries were reported following a single-vehicle accident at 9:10 a.m. Wednesday on Interstate 80 westbound at mile marker 136.6 in Cooper Township, the Clearfield-based state police reported.
According to the accident report, Lyndsey D. Grist, 22, of Williamsport was traveling westbound on I-80 at mile marker 136.4 when she heard a pop. Through her rearview mirror, she observed a metal piece rolling down the roadway. The metal piece appeared to have flames coming from it.
At that point, she pulled off onto the north shoulder of the roadway at mile marker 136.6 westbound. She and her passenger, Ryan D. Grist, 21, also of Williamsport, exited the vehicle and observed smoke under its hood. They also observed flames underneath the vehicle.
Both attempted to stop passing motorists when a police officer stopped in an unmarked vehicle to assist them. The officer attempted to use his fire extinguisher but wasn’t able to successfully put out fire. Then, the Grist vehicle became engulfed with flames.
The vehicle sustained disabling damage based upon physical evidence at the scene, state police said.
