CLARION – Senior 132-pounder Jake Keller and junior heavyweight Brad Stubbs of Curwensville advanced to the semifinals of the 2012 District 9 Class AA Wrestling Tournament by upholding their high seeds with pairs of falls during the 5½-hour opening session in Clarion University’s Waldo S. Tippin Gymnasium Friday.
Â
The No. 1-seeded Keller, one of a dozen returning former champions in the 16-team tourney, spread-eagled Oswayo Valley sophomore Kevin Carson in 17 seconds and cradled Smethport junior Justin Burgess for a pin with five seconds left in the first period to begin his bid for a third title.
Â
Stubbs, the No. 3 seed, overpowered Brockway freshman Gavin Yahner for an 11-second fall that was the quickest of the 85 that made for an early exit for the fans and later threw Smethport senior Tyler Buchholz, the sixth seed, to his back to end their quarterfinal match 35 seconds into the second period.
Â
Keller (30-2) and Stubbs (11-5) will be joined in Saturday’s 10 a.m. session by seven teammates who are still in the hunt for a third-place or fourth-place finish that would send them to the Northwest Regional next weekend at Sharon.
Â
The Golden Tide’s consolation quarterfinalists are Sam Bressler at 106, Tyler Mays at 120, Trey McKenzie at 145, Dakota Royer at 152, Austin Pollick at 170, Chad Desmett at 182 and Spencer Smeal at 220.
Â
Desmett (13-12), seeded fifth, sandwiched two falls around a tech fall loss to Oswayo Valley junior Jake Wichert, the fourth seed. The Golden Tide senior tightened up a front headlock to pin Johnsonburg senior Dylan Delong in 1:14 and, in the consy second round, cradled Port Allegany sophomore Bryce Stahlman in 1:57.
Â
Pollick (12-15) also was 2-1 with a pair of shutouts. He broke free off a restart with 1:18 left for the first point of his match with freshman Zach Stiglitz of Keystone and then countered a deep single-leg attempt for a takedown with three seconds left to beat the No. 8 seed 3-0. Pinned by Port Allegany junior Alex Gular, a returning champ and No. 1 seed, in the quarters, the Golden Tide junior bounced back to work over Oswayo Valley Kyle Wilcox for a 15-0 tech fall in 3:39.
Â
Pollick and McKenzie are among seven unseeded wrestlers still alive.
Â
McKenzie (7-12) also was dropped into the consy rounds by a No. 1 seed, Kane sophomore Evan Delong, and responded by dominating seventh-seeded Jordan Johnson. He led the Smethport sophomore 12-0 when he used a half-nelson and press for a fall at 4:41.
Â
The seventh-seeded Mays (16-11) also split two bouts. After losing 7-0 to Smethport senior Nate Schwab, the No. 2 seed, he ousted Cranberry junior Seth Harry 9-5 with three reversals, the last one a Peterson Roll for a five-point move in the third period.
Bressler (14-14), Royer (8-20) and Smeal (6-7) received byes into the quarters, lost to higher seeds and then picked up byes in the consy second round.
Â
A first-period takedown enabled No. 3 seed Brandon Saline of Cameron County to avert an upset by the sixth-seeded Bressler in the duel of freshmen bantams.
Â
Smeal, a No. 7 seed, trailed by that same 2-0 score going to the third period against No. 2 seed Nick Budd of Port Allegany but gave up a penalty point for interlocking and a reversal to fall 5-0.
Â
Royer, bumped up one seed to No. 7 because a higher seed failed to make weight, was pinned by Brookville sophomore Zach Vroman, a returning champ and the No. 2 seed.
Â
Back-to-back losses ended the season for senior Alex Holt at 138 and juniors Nate Wriglesworth at 160 and Jake Kavelak at 195.
Freshman Travis Lansberry at 113 and senior Brandon Sass at 126 did not make weight.
Â
OVERTIME – The nine Curwensville entries combined for a 10-13 record… All of the top two seeds advanced… Three No. 3 seeds and four No. 4 seeds were beaten… In addition to Keller and Stubbs, eight other semifinalists advanced via the two-pin route, with No. 1 heavyweight seed Josh Kibbie of Kane spending the least time on the mats, 1:08… Brookville has 10 semifinalists, one more than Ridgway. They also have three wrestlers each in the consolations and are one-two in scoring… Redbank Valley boasts seven semifinalists, and Kane has six… Former Curwensville mat and gridiron standout Nick Sipes got his first taste of officiating at districts… The consolation finals will start at 5 p.m. with the Parade of Champions to precede the championship matches that are set for 6:30.
