HARRISBURG — Gov. Edward G. Rendell announced that 115 men and women have joined the ranks of the Pennsylvania State Police following their graduation Friday from the State Police Academy in Hershey.
“These new troopers will help Pennsylvania better protect its residents,” Rendell said. “Quality of life is what we are working to improve, and more uniformed troopers in our communities will provide a higher level of police services and protection.”
Rendell’s 2006-07 budget raised the department’s complement to 4,673; the largest number of troopers in the state’s history. Members from the class that graduated Friday, a class that began training Sept. 18, and a class that will enter the academy in January 2007 will help the department reach that historic complement. Some cadets from each of the classes will fill existing or anticipated vacancies.
Dauphin County Common Pleas Court Judge Lawrence F. Clark Jr., a former state trooper, delivered the principal message during the graduation ceremony at Central Dauphin High School. State Police Commissioner Jeffrey B. Miller offered remarks and Cadet John P. Chulock of Hazleton, Luzerne County, spoke on behalf of the cadet class.
Chulock was named the outstanding cadet by his classmates and instructors, receiving the American Legion Award.
Also receiving awards were:
Cadet Jason C. Haines of Northampton, Northampton County — Daniel F. Dunn High Scholastic Award; Cadet Justin J. Dembowski of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County — Charles B. Gesford High Pistol Award; Cadet Michael J. Wienckoski of West Pittston, Luzerne County — Paul J. Evanko Driver Proficiency Award; and Cadet Bradley J. Walters of Natrona Heights, Allegheny County — John K. Schafer Memorial Physical Fitness Award.
Major Robert R. Einsel, director of the State Police Bureau of Training and Education, supervised the training of the class, which was the 122nd cadet class to graduate from the State Police Academy in Hershey since it opened in 1960.
