UNIVERSITY PARK – Several photo retrospectives have been posted online to honor the memory and achievements of Coach Joe Paterno and offer a glimpse back through memorable moments of his life. Following are three from the University’s Public Information office, University Libraries and Intercollegiate Athletics, respectively.
“Joe Paterno through the Years” is a set of 24 captioned photos, the majority taken within the last seven years, of Paterno active on the field and speaking to audiences, ranging from his days as an assistant coach in 1960, to two iconic images capturing his Nittany Lion teams’ two national championship wins, to his 400th win on Nov. 6, 2010, to the ESPN television special “Difference Makers: Life Lessons with Paterno and Krzyzewski,” held Monday, June 20, 2011, at Eisenhower Auditorium, to his post-game press conference following his 409th career victory on Oct. 29, 2011. It can be viewed online.
The Penn State University Libraries’ photo album, compiled by University Archives, includes more than two dozen historical images of Paterno that cover his career from 1950 to the present. Photos include a color image of Paterno kneeling in front of the Nittany Lion Shrine, black-and-white images of the coach in academic regalia while offering the commencement address on the field of Beaver Stadium, a color image of the coach commentating from the press box with his brother George Paterno and a black-and-white shot of the coach rallying his team in the locker room. The album is available online.
“In Memorium: Joe Paterno through the Years” is a compilation of 115 photos spanning his lifetime. The first shot shows Paterno as a toddler with his parents. Subsequent images include several shots of him with his wife, Sue, including one showing her emotional reaction to his record 324th win, breaking the record previously set by Paul “Bear” Bryant; on the field with the Nittany Lion mascot and cheerleaders, unveiling the Wheaties cereal box bearing his profile; offering a “No. 1” jersey to President Ronald Reagan at the White House with the national-champion Nittany Lion team; accepting his award during his induction into the College Football Hall of Fame and many other memorable highlights.
