Clayton Edmund “Skip” Peters of Clearfield, born March 16, 1929 at home in Bigler, PA. He was the son of the late Clifford Lee and Thelma Marie (Knepp) Peters. Clayton died Jan. 11, 2012 at Clearfield Hospital.
He was a graduate of Clearfield High School, class of 1948 and a graduate of Columbia Technical Institute of Washington D.C. class of 1951.
Clayton was employed at the U.S. Naval Gun Factory in Washington D.C. and the Naval Ordinance Supply Depot in Mechanicsburg, PA and worked on the design of the Nike Missile for Bell Labs of New York City. Employment also included Joy Manufacturing in Franklin; Curtis Wright Corp. in Quehanna; and Penn DOT in Clearfield. He retired from Bradford Coal Company after serving 30 plus years. He owned and operated Peters Drafting Service and was a partner in Gem Clay Brickyard, in Winburne.
He was a member of the Bigler United Methodist Church where he attended since childhood; he served on the Local Board, Chairman of the Board and as a trustee. He belonged to the Clearfield Masonic Lodge No. 314: Consistory Valley of Altoona; Jaffa Shrine; secretary/treasure of Clearfield Shrine Club; Clearfield County Shrine Oriental Band. He was a charter life member of B.J.W. volunteer fire company also serving as secretary. He was a member and chairman of the Woodland Bigler Water Authority. For 25 years, he served as secretary for the Holmes Safety Association and received a National Service Award in Washington D.C. in 1985. He was a charter member of the Pennsylvania Mining Professionals.
Clayton is survived by his wife, Erma (Bush) Peters whom he married in 1952 at Rockville, MD; daughter Loretta Marie Fullington; and two granddaughters; Heidi Marie and her husband Mark Burke of Plymouth, MA and Tenley Lenore and her husband Gene Warhurst of Fairhope, AL. Also surviving are great grandchildren; Liam Clayton Burke, Lily Brooke Burke, and Finn Matthew Burke all of MA.
He is preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother, Robert James and an infant sister, Mary Ellen.
Funeral Services will be held on Jan. 14 at the Hyde Wesleyan Church, 1215 Riverview Road, Hyde at 3:00 p.m. with Pastor Robert Croft and Pastor Roger McGarry co-officiating. Interment will be in the Bradford Cemetery, Woodland.
Friends will be received at Bennett and Houser Funeral Home, Inc., Clearfield on Jan. 13 from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m. The Clearfield Masonic Lodge No. 314 will conduct a Masonic Service on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
