CLEARFIELD – Last month, Clearfield Borough Council took a stand regarding the proposed Camp Hope Run Landfill in Boggs Township.
That stand was not one of “for or against,” but it was one that showed some concern, however not enough for several borough residents.
A few of them turned out Thursday to speak to council about their stance, asking “Do you want this in your community?”
The borough’s position on the proposed landfill is as follows: “We, the members of Clearfield Borough Council, are disturbed about the increase in traffic on our roads and in our community, which is anticipated to arise as a result of a proposed landfill in Boggs Township. We at Clearfield Borough will enforce our laws in accordance of speed, tonnage, spillage and any other environmental concerns, which will impact upon the community. We will enforce these laws in order to protect the best interest of our citizens.”
Marven Smith of Clearfield said, “It’s my understanding that you folks don’t know what was taking place.
“We know we have garbage and we know we need to have a place for it, but it doesn’t need to be here,” he continued.
Smith went on to apologize that a meeting to learn more about landfills in general was scheduled the week prior when council had committee meetings.
Smith said the next meeting will be set up as to not affect the borough’s meeting nights.
Councilman Mike Errigo asked that someone who has a new landfill in their area and is happy with it be asked to speak at the next event.
Smith said the people of Clearfield need to realize that the landfill is “not a done deal.”
Jay Fannin of Clearfield also addressed the council, saying, “We don’t want to sell out the community. I really feel that we’ve got to take a stand.”
