This year’s Lewie Greene Memorial 4-H Scholarship recipient is Devon Turner. Devon is a member of the Thundering Hoofbeats 4-H Club, as well as the Clearfield County 4-H Teen Council. Throughout his ten years as a 4-H member in Clearfield County, Devon has completed numerous 4-H-releated projects including rabbit, horse, embryology & poultry, wildlife, biking, electricity, and teen leadership.
In his 4-H club, Devon has held the offices of president, treasurer, news reporter, teen leader, and chairman of the window display committee. Over the years, Devon has attended Regional 4-H Camp Kanesatake, as both a camper & counselor, and Pennsylvania State 4-H Achievement Days multiple times taking part in the rabbit & cavy quiz bowl contest. Additional Devon has been very active each year at the Clearfield County Fair with his poultry & rabbits, as well as livestock judging and community service opportunities to beautify the fairgrounds. In 2011, Devon received the honor of having the grand champion Rabbit Meat Pen in the 28th Annual Clearfield County 4-H & FFA Junior Livestock & Poultry Sale.
Devon credits his experience in the 4-H program with having a huge impact on his life. 4-H taught and enhanced Devon’s skill in public speaking, decision-making, animal knowledge & caretaking, and learning through hands-on activities. 4-H has allowed Devon to nurture his love of animals by giving him opportunities to show them, learn more about them, and challenge himself on the knowledge he gained about them over the years.
Devon is a 2011 graduate of the Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School. Devon is the 18 year old son of Mark & Sally Turner of Philipsburg. Devon is currently a freshman at Penn State University – University Park Campus majoring in Agricultural Sciences. Devon received a scholarship in the amount of $250.00.
The Lewie Greene Memorial 4-H Scholarship is open to all 4-H members that are graduating seniors entering in a two or four year post high school curriculum. Applications are available at the Clearfield County Cooperative Extension Office and the deadline to apply each year is Aug. 1. Mr. Greene was a 30 year leader of the Harmony 4-H Club, who had a true passion to educate and help the 4-H youth understand their true potential.
