HARRISBURG – PennDOT’s Live Free Ride Alive (LFRA) campaign recently launched a mobile version of LiveFreeRideAlive.com, making access to important motorcycle safety and training information even easier for motorcycle enthusiasts using a smartphone.
“The Live Free Ride Alive motorcycle campaign is a great way to get lots of riders actively thinking about safety,” said PennDOT Secretary Barry J. Schoch, P.E. “The new mobile site and other enhancements not only keep the website more appealing, but also allow us to keep up with an increasingly mobile and technologically savvy group.”
The LFRA mobile website offers many of the same features as the main website, including the ability to view the campaign’s safety documentary; read and post messages about riding experiences; take the “Be One Less” crash pledge; obtain information about Pennsylvania Motorcycle Safety Program training courses; view safety tips; and access gear and bike upkeep checklists.
The mobile site includes a motorcycle routes section, which provides riders with information, directions and points of interest for 12 popular riding routes across Pennsylvania. There is also a feature where riders can help spread the word about the LFRA campaign through various social media platforms.

Along with the launch of the mobile website, significant enhancements were made to the main LFRA website, including an interactive motorcycle knowledge test. This addition to the website gives prospective riders a chance to test their motorcycle know-how before taking the actual test to obtain a motorcycle learner’s permit. The test also offers seasoned riders the ability to brush up on their motorcycle knowledge.
Launched in 2010, the LFRA campaign utilizes several types of media to spread the word that the greatest reduction in crash severity comes from factors under the rider’s control, such as speeding and DUI, and being properly trained and licensed to operate a motorcycle.
Having earned several awards in its first year of existence, the LFRA campaign and website recently received additional accolades from the transportation community. In August, the campaign’s website received a first place in the 2011 National Transportation Public Affairs Workshop skills contest.
The campaign and its website were showcased in September on the Governors Highway Safety Association’s website as a state highway safety best practice.
