UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Sophomore middle blocker Katie Slay (Raleigh, N.C.) was named this week’s Big Ten Co-Defensive Player of the Week. This is the second honor of Slay’s career. She shares the honor with Ohio State’s Sarah Mignin.
The Hampton Inn Classic MVP, Slay averaged 1.90 blocks per set in three matches over the weekend as the Nittany Lions defeated Long Island, Rutgers and Florida Gulf Coast. Slay totaled 19 blocks for the weekend, including tying her personal best with 10 vs. FGCU. She also finished second on the team with 27 kills, averaging 2.70 kills per set on a team-best .561 hitting. Against Long Island, Slay posted eight kills and a team-best five blocks. She followed up that performance with 10 kills on 13 errorless swings for a career-high hitting percentage of .769 vs. Rutgers. Against the Eagles, Slay was third on the team with nine kills and only one error in 14 attempts.
