This week, the Eye takes a break from our usual summer fare to pay tribute to a local legend. Al Siegel passed away on June 20, leaving behind a powerlifting legacy that extends far beyond our community. In the lifting community, ‘Big Al’ is known across the country and indeed, around the world for his personal records, his commitment to the sport, but especially for his generosity towards those who were fortunate enough to get to know him.
Al got into the sport relatively late in life- he was already in his 40’s – but he quickly became a fervent supporter of powerlifting, and pushed hard for the sport to remain drug-free. He served as director of countless meets, both in the Clearfield area and elsewhere, and he also judged events across the country.
Al founded the Anti-Drug Athletes United (ADAU), and their National Championship meet was held this past weekend at the Expo I building in Clearfield. I went to the meet on Sunday and asked if anyone wanted to share their memories of Big Al – the response was overwhelming! I chose the best of the collection for the video you are about to see – it’s a bit long for a ‘podcast’ at 12 minutes, but if you have the time PLEASE watch all of it – you’ll see what an impact Big Al had on so many people. without further ado, here’s the video.
