CLEARFIELD — The Clearfield Chiefs picked up a Mercy Rule win in the elimination game of the Jefferson-Clearfield County Legion League playoffs Thursday night by dumping visiting Brookville 12-0 behind a one-hit shutout by Tyler Jacobson.
The Chiefs scored all of the runs that they would need in the bottom of the first inning when winning pitcher Jacobson and center fielder Shane Harper delivered run-scoring singles.
Four-run salvos in the third and fourth innings by the Chiefs sealed Brookville’s fate, while the 12th run in the bottom of the fifth inning closed the deal by virtue of the league’s 12-run rule.
Leading the offensive output for the Chiefs was shortstop Derek Danver who had two singles and a double, scored twice, and plated two runners. Danver is a remarkable 11 for 11 in his last 11 official at-bats.
Picking up two hits for the Chiefs were cather Andrew Redden and Harper.
The Chiefs will hit the road for another elimination game when they travel to regular season champion DuBois, 2-1 losers on the winner’s bracket side, Saturday night at 6:00 p.m.
