BROOKVILLE – The Clearfield American Legion Post 8 baseball team paid the consequences for stranding 13 runners with a 6-4 Jefferson County League loss to Brookville at McKinley Field Tuesday evening.

Manager Sid Lansberry learned that Reynoldsville is forfeiting the remainder of its games, so the Chiefs picked up three more wins for an 8-6 record in the league.

They tumbled to 9-12-1 overall because of the lack of a big clutch hit while Zane Hackett pitched a five-hitter and clubbed a three-run homer for Brookville.

Clearfield had plenty of opportunities with six walks, three hit batsmen and six Brookville errors.

The Chiefs left the bases full in the first and third innings, fell behind 4-0 on Zackett’s long ball and never got closer than two runs.

They broke through in the fourth on two errors and a single by Jonas Kochan and added another singleton in the fifth when Shane Harper singled to plate Andrew Redden, who had led off with a hit.

Aided by Clearfield miscues, Brookville scored a pair of unearned runs to carry a 6-2 lead into the seventh frame.

The Chiefs converted two walks into runs via an error and Kyler Kephart’s second single, but Hackett got the final out with the tying runs on base.

Redden, who suffered the loss, also hurled a complete game in his second start. He struck out eight and walked three, allowing eight hits and four earned runs.

Clearfield will close the regular season with home games against DuBois Wednesday and Punxsutawney Thursday at the Bison Sports Complex. Punxsy handed champion DuBois its first JCL setback 11-10 Tuesday.
