HYDE – Jarrett Fulmer and Ronny Ogden combined on a seven-hitter and the Clearfield Area High School baseball team got a trio of two-out, two-run singles to return to the win column at Lewistown’s expense, 11-3, Tuesday afternoon at the Bison Sports Complex.
Coming through with the clutch hits were Drew Brown to erase the Panthers’ 2-0 lead in the first inning and Fulmer and Derek Danver to give the Bisons a 10-2 cushion in the fifth frame.
Andrew Redden sparked the seven-run fifth with a long homer, his fifth of the season, to center field and capped it with a scorcher to the right of second base that plated Danver.
No. 9 batter Kyler Kephart also had a pair of RBIs and made the defensive play of the Mountain League crossover make-up game after moving from first base to right field in the fourth inning, ranging far into right center for a diving grab of Chris Wilson’s high fly.
Kephart’s groundout sent Coleman Kubala home with an insurance run for a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the inning after the Bison designated hitter doubled to left center and moved up on Ogden’s sacrifice bunt. And he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the fifth, forcing in pinch-runner Kurtis Krise.
Kubala’s average climbed over .500 when his two-out high pop fly dropped just inside the right field line for a single to keep the fifth inning alive for the Bisons.
“He continues to do a good job as our DH,” coach Sid Lansberry said.
The bottom of the lineup — Brown, Kubala, Ogden and Kephart — accounted for four hits, four RBIs and four runs.
“That’s big,” Lansberry said.
So was the pitching performance, especially after Lewistown jumped in front on Cole Welman’s run-scoring single and Ted Wilson’s sacrifice fly in the top of the first.
Fulmer got through two more innings before being lifted because of a sore shoulder.
“He didn’t feel right from the beginning, and he developed a knot in the back of his shoulder,” Lansberry explained. “It’s just tightness, but we don’t want to mess with that.”
Ogden worked the final four innings for his first varsity victory, allowing a harmless run in the seventh on two hits and an error. The junior right-hander gave up only one other hit and walked one.
“He did a nice job; that’s two games in a row,” Lansberry said. “Both pitchers did the job against a pretty good hitting team. Their stats were good.
“They’re a pretty decent team, 10-6 going in.”
The Bisons got even when Brown cracked a single to center after loser Kirby Moist walked Danver and Trevor Flanagan around Tyler Jacobson’s single to fill the sacks.
“He got us back in the game,” Lansberry said.
Flanagan, whose hitting streak was snapped at 12 games, scored the go-ahead run on a Lewistown misplay.
The Bisons, who had lost four of their last five outings, dominated the rest of the way in improving to 7-9.
“We needed that with the week we’re having,” Lansberry said.
Clearfield will bring down the curtain on their Mountain League Allegheny Division schedule with games against Central at Martinsburg Wednesday and at Huntingdon Thursday.
