John “Jack” Mathews Jr., 82, of Grampian, passed away May 7, 2011 at his residence after a lengthy illness.
Born Oct. 6, 1928 in Penn Township, he was the son of John Sr. and Myrtle (Passmore) Mathews. Mr. Mathews was the owner/operator of Mathews Coal Co. of Grampian and after his retirement had been a groundskeeper at the Grandview/Eagles Ridge Golf Club.
He was a member of the Grampian Church of God, was a member of the Edward Rafferty Post Grampian American Legion, and was a U S Army Veteran of World War II.
Surviving are 3 daughters and a son; Nancy L. Farwell and her husband Earle of Hepburnia, Brenda M. Hoyt and her husband William of Lancaster, Jackie R. Mathews of Pickerington, OH, and Joy K. Withers and her husband Mike of Jacksonville, FL.
Also surviving are 9 grandchildren: LeAnn Farwell, Angela Shonk, Ryan Hoyt, Chris Hoyt, Laura Mathews, Andy Mathews, Alex Mathews, Melanie Withers and Michelle Roberts; 4 great grandchildren: Brianna Rubin, Isabell Mathews-Hernandez, Jolene Roberts and Jena Roberts; a brother Howard Mathews and his wife Dolly of West Virginia and a sister Mae Maderia and her husband Gust Jr. of Grampian.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter Annette Mathews, a great granddaughter Layla Mathews, 2 brothers Amos and James Mathews, and 2 sisters Mary Block and Ruth Jones.
Funeral Services for Mr. Mathews will be held at the Grampian Church of God, Chestnut Grove Highway Grampian, PA, on May 14 at 11:00 a.m., with the Pastor Earle Farwell and Reverend Gust J. Maderia Jr., co-officiating. Interment will be in the Chestnut Grove Cemetery, RD Grampian.
Friends will be received at the Church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until time of services.
