With the regular season winding down, the Penn State New Kensington softball team is scrambling to make-up seven doubleheaders in eight games. From April 21 to 28, barring any additional inclement weather, the New Kensington Lady Lions will sandwich 14 conference games around the April 24 Easter holiday. That will bring the team to the brink of the Penn State University Athletic Conference playoffs that are set to begin on April 29. The top four teams in the nine-team league advance to the double-elimination tournament at University Park.
Coach Mike Marsilli’s squad is sporting an undefeated PSUAC record of 2-0 and is currently sitting in fourth place behind Penn College, 3-1, Penn State Mont Alto, 7-3, and Penn State Beaver, 8-0. Penn State Worthington Scranton, 2-2, is a game behind New Kensington. Since sweeping a home doubleheader from Penn State Schuylkill on April 3, the team has been washed out of 12 consecutive games, including six on its home turf at Wolf Pack Park.
The battle with the weather begins on the road at noon Thursday, April 21, at Penn State Fayette, followed by a 2 p.m. twin bill the next day at home against Beaver. After trips to Hazleton (April 23), Penn College (April 25) and Worthington Scranton (April 26), the New Kensington Lady Lions conclude the season at Wolf Pack park against Mont Alto (April 27) and Penn State Greater Allegheny (April 28).
