DUBOIS – Sandy Township will receive $181,953 in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds this year.
The announcement was made by Township Manager Shawn Arbaugh at Monday’s board of supervisors’ meeting.
CDBG funds are intended to assist low- to moderate-income individuals, as well as for blight removal and urgent needs.
As a result, the grant has specific guidelines and limitations, which include that:
- 70 percent ($127,367.10) be spent on projects that benefit low- to moderate-income residents;
- no more than 30 percent ($54,585.90) be used for demolition or clearing costs; and
- no more than 18 percent ($54,585.90) be claimed for administrative costs.
It was also noted that there will be a second CDBG public hearing to discuss potential uses of this funding.
Arbaugh expects around 70 percent of CDBG funds for the next 10 years to go towards repayment of loans for recent sewer projects.
In other business, the supervisors voted to apply for a Multimodal Grant that would fund an expansion of area walkways.
More specifically, it would connect the Wolf Creek Rails to Trails walkway to the DuBois City Meadows Trail.
The application would seek $3 million, and does not require matching funds.
The blinking stop light on state Route 255, outside the DuBois Mall, is also in the process of being fixed.
Currently, the township is waiting on a new controller that will fix this light issue.
Once it’s been resolved, it plans to investigate why two of the 11 stoplight controllers have failed about the same time.
It was also reported that PennDOT will provide $160,000 towards repairing the Brick Road Bridge.
Part of the western wing of the bridge has collapsed into the spring.
Arbaugh said upon investigation, it was determined it’s still safe for travel with installation of a temporary guardrail.
The township will have one year to use the funding.
The township advised it will soon announce roadway paving plans on its official Web site and Facebook page.
And Phase 2 of the Kiwanis Trail sewer project will also get underway soon.
