DUBOIS – A three run top of the seventh helped the Lady Bison break a 2-2 tie against the Lady Beavers of DuBois (8-7) to go on to win by a 5-2 final score on Tuesday evening.
The Lady Bison found themselves with a 2-0 lead early in the contest as they struck first in the game with two runs in the top of the second inning. Olivia Bender and Alaina Fedder walked to begin the inning with Alexis Benton eventually knocking in Fedder via an RBI double to make it a 1-0 game after Bender was gunned out at third on a steal attempt earlier in the frame.
Alexis Bumbarger kept the inning going as she reached on an error to advance Fedder to third base. Bumbarger was followed up by Anna Twigg who came through with a fly ball to right that allowed Fedder to tag and score to make it a 2-0 lead for the visiting team.
The Lady Beavers did not go away as they would strike for two runs of their own in the bottom half of the fourth inning. Morgan Pasternak kicked-off the bottom of the fourth with a single to left and eventually would swipe two bags in the inning to get herself to third with just one out. Saige Weible was able to help manufacture a run for the Lady Beavers on an RBI groundout to trim the lead to 2-1.
With two outs, Taylor Smith sent a ball over the center field fence to knot the score at 2-2. The hits by Pasternak and Smith in the fourth were two of the three DuBois hits in the game with three hitter Lauren Walker also adding a single for the Lady Beavers.
After scoreless fifth and sixth innings thanks to excellent pitching from Emma Hipps from Clearfield and Allie Snyder of DuBois, the Lady Bison made their final rally of the game in the top of the seventh as Ruby Singleton started the rally for the Lady Bison with a one out single. After a second out, Lauren Ressler belted one of her signature doubles to keep the inning alive for the Lady Bison.
With two in scoring position and two out, Olivia Bender came to the plate. With Bender at the dish, Singleton was able to score on a DuBois miscue to score the go-ahead run and make it a 3-2 Clearfield advantage. On the play, Ressler also moved up 60 feet to third base.
After Bender reached by way of a walk, Samantha Campolong pinch ran for the Lady Bison and flashed her speed by swiping second to put two runners in scoring position with two away. Fedder would come through in the clutch situation with a two out and two RBI double to score both Ressler and Campolong to extend the lead to 5-2.
In the final half inning, Hipps showed why she is the ace of the Clearfield team as she struck out the final three batters looking to give her 10 strikeouts for the game and secure another win for the Lady Bison.
The Lady Bison were able to collect eight hits and four total doubles in the game with Kylee Hertlein, Fedder, Ressler, and Benton all contributing a double each. Singleton turned in a strong game with a three-for-four day out of the lead-off spot while also scoring a run. Fedder also turned in a strong game for Clearfield as she was two-for-three with a two bagger and two RBIs on the day.
The win helps Clearfield improve to 11-5 and they have now won four straight games heading into a highly anticipated Clearfield County showdown with the Lady Tide of Curwensville. The game will take place on Wednesday, May 19 with first pitch slated for 4:15 p.m.
