JOHNSONBURG, Pa. – The Lady Tide may have missed out on the 2020 campaign, but they showed little signs of rust as they began their 2021 season as winners over the Johnsonburg Lady Rams, 8-1.
The key to this ball game for Curwensville was the lights out pitching performance from junior Joslynne Freyer. She pitched six innings of two hit ball, giving up just one run, one walk, and striking out nine batters.
“We really hit the ball so much better than I anticipated coming into this game,” said Curwensville Head Softball Coach Allen Leigey. “We got some early runs on the board against their pitcher and that was the breaking point of the game.”
The Lady Tide were led on offense by Mackenzie Wall who broke the 0-0 tie in the first inning on the first pitch she saw with a three-run shot. She added her second home-run of the day in the third inning and accounted for five of the teams eight RBI’s of the afternoon.
“Wall’s homerun really got us started offensively and gave us some confidence in the game. We played almost flawlessly in the field and I am so pleased with this win early in the season over a nice team in Johnsonburg,” Leigey added.
Logan Sheeder was able to collect a three-hit game herself while also adding two RBI’s and two runs scored. Abby Pentz, Freyer, and Marlee Gasper were also able to add hits in the ballgame, totaling nine for Curwensville in all.
The Lady Rams were led on offense by Julia Jones and Alexa Mahoney who each recorded a hit for Johnsonburg. Jones was able to score on an RBI from Julie Peterson who started the game in the circle for the Lady Rams.
The Lady Tide will return to action Wednesday afternoon as they travel to DuBois to take on the DuBois Central Catholic Lady Cardinals. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
