Sharon — After a strong showing at the District 9 AA Championships in Clearfield last weekend, where several of the Tide wrestlers exceeded their seeds and four moved on to the North West Regional, the Tide came back down to earth in Sharon this past weekend and weren’t able to win a single match, going 0-8.
Junior 113 pounder Jake Carfley, the District 9 champ and the number two seed at this tourney, just couldn’t get his offense going in either of his matches. He was defeated 2-0 against Jake Bennett (11-7) from Fort LeBoeuf, and lost 2-1 to Redbank Valley’s Cole Bish (10-5) in the wrestlebacks. Carfley defeated Bish 5-0 last week during the district meet. Carfley ended the season with an 8-3 record and goes in to his senior season sporting a 49-26 mark overall.
Nik Fegert, a sophomore 126 pounder, saw his season end after being pinned twice. First he lost to Cochranton’s Jack Martinec (20-1) in 1:51. Then Gunnar Gage (19-7) of Cambridge Springs made even shorter work of Fegert by picking up the fall in 39 seconds. Fegert (7-5) is now 22-18 overall in his career.
The last two Tide were freshman wrestlers who each gained some valuable experience this post season.
Ryder Kuklinskie at 132 was also pinned twice in his regionals debut. First off it was Commodore Perry’s Zane Grinnell (18-6) in 1:01, and then it was 2:05 to Sharpsville’s Caullin Summers (22-8).
At 145 pounds Logan Aughenbaugh was pinned in the quarterfinals by Hickory’s Carter Gill (24-4) in 3:20. He was then eliminated from the tourney by Ft. LeBoeuf’s Connor McChesney (12-8) by a 5-2 count.
Perennial District 10 power Reynolds once again won the team title, with 102.5 points. The top finish for a District 9 team was the fourth place finish by Brookville with 59.5 points.
The top-3 finishers in each weight class from the region advanced to the Super Regionals on Saturday March 6 on the campus of IUP in the Kovalchick Center.
