CLEARFIELD – Farm animals, high voltage equipment and elementary school students came together Tuesday as part of an agricultural safety program at the Clearfield Fair Grounds.
The Third Annual Clearfield County Safety Day brought second graders together from all over the area to teach them safety on several topics in a way so the kids can understand it. There were live demonstrations of the dangers of high voltage power lines involving a hotdog. A child’s bicycle helmet was hit by a car and landed on his head. Gun safety involved telling the nearest adult that the child has found a gun.
Groups and members of the community assisted in the fifteen stations. The 2009 Clearfield County Fair Queen Rachel Syktich hosted a station on fair and amusement safety. District Attorney William Shaw, jr., held a station on bullying with McGruff the Crime Dog materials. Future Farmers of America were also present.
Students also learned lawn mower safety, how to properly call 911 and about mental health.
Eight schools attended with around 350 students among them.
“We will have to go to a two day event eventually,” said Jana Davidson.
This year West Branch Elementary dropped out of attending, but Penn-Grampian Elementary stepped up to fill their spot.
“We’ve been really growing,” said Davidson.
According to Davidson, she has heard about kids who were going home and educating their parents on what they learned at the safety day.
