CURWENSVILLE – It is no secret that basketball is a team sport, but once in awhile a player steps forward and carries his team on his back. And that is exactly what happened Wednesday night at Curwensville High School’s Patton Hall in boys Moshannon Valley League play.
Golden Tide junior Trevor Lansberry had a monster night by dropping in a game and career high 36 points as Curwensville broke a 13 game losing streak in knocking off the Glendale Vikings 67-55.
The first time the two squads met earlier this season, at Glendale High School, the Vikings handed the Golden Tide a 66-52 loss.
Tide head coach Matt Wassil talked afterwards about the win and stopping the losing streak saying briefly, “We sure were hoping to get the win tonight, especially on Senior Night. We have been playing much better as of late in the last few games so this really wasn’t a total surprise. It just feels good to get the win.”
Each squad won one of the first two quarters. Curwensville the first eight minutes 20-12 and then Glendale taking the second quarter 16-8. And with that the teams went into halftime knotted at 28 each.
On this night the best team coming out of the locker room for second half action was the Golden Tide, who outscored the Vikings 39-27 to pick up a much needed victory.
Adam Miller, the lone senior for Curwensville, added 13 points in the win.
Glendale was led in scoring by Ryan Sinclair with 18 points with Logan Cree dropping in 10.
There was a big disparity in free throws in the game as Glendale made two of just five taken while the Golden Tide connected on 15 of 25.
In junior varsity action Wednesday night the Tide beat the Vikings by a score of 31-27. High scorer for the Golden Tide was Landon Swatsworth with 11 points.
Curwensville, now 2-14 on the year, will be at home again on Friday night with a game against the Johnsonburg Rams. The JV game starts at 6 pm with the varsity to immediately follow.
