WOMEN’S SWIMMING
INDIANA — Sophomore Paige Mikesell (Clearfield) hit Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference qualifying marks in a pair of individual wins and also swam on a victorious relay team as Indiana University of Pennsylvania defeated Gannon 124-80 Friday to even its record at 2-2.
She touched first in the 100-yard freestyle in 53.44 seconds and the 200 individual medley in 2:11.33. Her 25.63 butterfly leg helped the Crimson Hawks’ 200 medley relay quartet to a 1:51.18 clocking.
Mikesell has won six individual events and been on three winning relay teams.

MEN’S SWIMMING
ALTOONA — Former Clearfield Area High School teammates Chase Bietz (Clearfield) of Penn State Behrend and Isaac Swanson (Clearfield) of Penn State Altoona finished 1-2 in two events during the visiting Lions’ 160-67 win Saturday.
Bietz notched his seventh and eighth individual wins of the season with times of 53.98 seconds in the 100-yard backstroke and 4:20.50 in his first 400 individual medley.
Swanson touched second in 56.16 and 4:26.58, respectively, with the latter time putting him in the Penn State Altoona record books for the fifth time in his rookie year.
He also placed third in the 100 freestyle in 49.66 seconds and turned in a 22.23 anchor leg that stopped the clock at 1:33.25 for the victorious 200 freestyle relay foursome.
Swanson, who also owns the program’s new standards for the 100 and 200 backstroke and 50 freestyle, has six individual wins and has been on seven winning relay teams.

AKRON, Ohio — Sophomores Hayden Steiner (Clearfield) and Tate Swanson (Clearfield) of Clarion both set two personal records at the 2019 Zippy Invitational hosted by Akron Friday through Sunday.
Steiner lowered his career times to 2:02.59 in the 200-yard butterfly and 53.91 in the 100 butterfly, placing 22nd and 36th, respectively. He also finished 49th in the 100 freestyle in a season-best 49.98.
Swanson has new personal records for the 50 freestyle (22.08, 51st place) and 100 backstroke (58.12, 35th place) and a new season mark for the 100 freestyle (49.55, 46th place). He wound up 52nd in his 200 freestyle race of the season with a 1:50.73 time.
They were on Golden Eagle ‘B teams in three relay events.
Steiner swam a 53.22 fly leg and Swanson a 49.08 anchor for the 400 medley foursome that placed 14th in 3:34.49. Steiner turned in a 24.01 fly split and Swanson a 22.10 anchor for the 200 medley quarter that finished 16th in 1:37.58. And Steiner had a 50.66 second leg and Swanson a 49.32 third split for the 400 freestyle team that was 15th in 3:19.93.

WRESTLING
PAINESVILLE, Ohio — Sophomore 197-pounder Luke McGonigal (Clearfield) posted a trio of first-period falls as Mercyhurst breezed past West Liberty (W.Va.) 31-9, Rochester (Mich.) College 41-12 and host Lake Erie College 31-10 at the Storm Duals Sunday.
McGonigal decked West Liberty’s Isiah Myers at 2:30, Rochester’s Anthony Filkins in 49 seconds and Lake Erie’s Chris Droege at 1:03.
He also pinned Jack Files at 3:23 in the Lakers’ 27-18 home mat win over Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference rival Millersville Friday. His fall broke an 8-8 tie and fueled a four-bout run that decided the Lakers’ dual meet opener.
McGonigal is 9-3 with eight falls, all but one in the first period, and a forfeit win.

ADA, Ohio — Junior 157-pounder Josiah McClarren (Clearfield ) pinned Bradley Collins of Defiance (Ohio) in just seven seconds during the first consolation round at the Ohio Northern Invitational Saturday.
McClarren lost to eventual champion Ryan Whitten of Otterbein (Ohio) by a technical fall, 22-4, in the opening round and was pinned by Clayton Schirmer of Wilmington (Ohio) at 1:13 in the second consy round.
He is 5-7 with two pins, a tech fall and a major decision.

MEN’S BASKETBALL
GREENSBURG — Senior forward Cody Spaid (Clearfield ) pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds and filled out his statistic line with five points, three assists, two steals and one blocked shot as once-beaten Pitt-Greensburg exploded in the second half to defeat D’Youville 91-73 Saturday.
The Bobcats are 6-1, the best start since the school joined the NCAA in 1997, and are atop the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference at 4-0 along with Hilbert (N.Y.).
Spaid registered six points, seven rebounds, a game-high five assists, two steals and one block in Pitt-Greensburg’s 81-74 win at Penn State Altoona last Wednesday.
AMCC stats show him third in defensive rebounds with a 6.3 average and eighth in total rebounds at 8.3 and tied for eighth in blocked shots with a 1.0 average.
His totals are 69 points (9.9 ppg), 58 rebounds, 17 assists, 10 steals and seven blocks.
