CLEARFIELD – Clearfield Borough Council discussed and voted on several items during Thursday’s regular meeting.
Mayor James Schell is alerting the public to an ongoing issue on Mount Joy Road. “Slow down!” he said, adding that there have been several near accidents on the road near the elementary school and down by Moyer’s Auto Body, where there is a school bus stop.
Schell noted that the Lawrence Township Supervisors are also very concerned and have already contacted the state Department of Transportation about the issue.
In the meantime, Schell said the borough and township need to put the word out that the area is dangerous, that people have nearly been hit crossing the road at Moyer’s and cars speed down the hill and have to abruptly break to avoid hitting other vehicles.
“It’s a Clearfield problem, it’s a Lawrence Township problem,” he said, adding that it is something that needs to be addressed by everyone.
Councilman Mason Strouse added that he works at the elementary school, and it is insane how fast people go down the hill, and he has personally witnessed near misses along the road.
The council also heard from Ann Wood, president of the Joseph & Elizabeth Shaw Public Library board of trustees. Wood thanked the council for its years of support for the library, noting that in 2010 state aid was cut from $78,000 to $55,000.
The operating expenses for the library are over $200,000 and so the library depends on municipal contributions as well as fundraisers and donations to serve the over 40,000 patrons each year in addition to providing programs to the community.
Borough Operations Manager Leslie Stott added that if the contributions from municipalities are reduced, it affects what the state contributes.
Council also approved several motions from the committees.
The Halloween parade will be held at the driving park on Oct. 29 and Trick or Treat will be held Oct. 31 from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Residents are reminded to turn their porch lights on if they are giving treats.
Streets will also be closed Dec. 7 for the YMCA’s annual Christmas parade followed by the tree lighting ceremony.
On Sept. 21, Zimmerman Avenue and a small portion of Martin Street will be closed from 3 p.m. – 7 p.m., for the West Side United Methodist Church block party.
The fall clean-up schedule for 2019 will be advertised. Residents are advised the clean-up will be for six weeks and end the Friday prior to Thanksgiving.
Under personnel, council accepted the resignation of meter attendant Gloria Silva and borough planning commission member Tim Winters and appointed Brian Lytle to the planning commission.
