DUBOIS – In 2011, Anne Young and students from the DuBois Area High School Pupil Enrichment Program and the DuBois Area Historical Society collaborated to produce a downtown DuBois self-guided walking tour.
During April of 2011, the students who developed the idea and a brochure for individual touring led the DuBois Area Historical Society’s third annual Spring Walk in downtown DuBois.
The students included Lily Brubaker, Drew Drum, Ella Glabicki, John Jacobson, Aaron Lines, Alli Mosco, Jenny Reese, Catherine Sheffo, Monica Sheffo and Sarah Whitaker.
Examining the self-guided walking tour brochure today disproves the concept that nothing changes rapidly in DuBois.
Late last year, historical society board members Gene Aravich and Carolyn Rhoades undertook the task of revising the walking tour brochure.
The society prepared the brochure and a grant from the Clearfield County Recreation and Tourism Authority to assist in the printing of the brochure.
Despite downtown DuBois’ lack of structural changes thanks to the city ordinance passed after the Great Fire of 1888, building uses have changed in the last eight years.
The resulting new brochure provides an opportunity to reexamine the downtown area. That goal will be realized with the DuBois Area Historical Society’s 11th annual Spring Walk on Saturday, May 11, at 10 a.m.
Anyone interested in a guided walking tour using the new brochure is invited to attend free of charge.
Small groups will leave from the DuBois Area Historical Society, 30 W. Long Ave., DuBois, every 15 minutes starting at 10 a.m.
No reservations are necessary and groups will be sent out on a first come first served basis.
A $500 Clearfield County Recreation and Tourism Authority matching grant helped pay for the brochure printing.
The spring walk has explored various locations over the years including: the Walkway, Helvetia, Big Soldier, Luthersburg, Sabula, Rumbarger Cemetery, Civilian Conservation Corps Trail at Parker Dam State Park, DuBois’ train network and DuBois’ “Hill” area.
