HYDE — Tyrone parlayed 11 hits and 12 walks into a 13-3 Mountain League victory over the Clearfield Area High School baseball team at the Bison Sports Complex Tuesday.
Up 3-2, the Golden Eagles batted around in the fourth and fifth innings to break it open and tacked on two runs in the sixth to invoke the Mercy Rule.
The loss, a contrast to their nine-inning, 3-2 defeat at Tyrone April 6, was the third in a row for the Bison, who slipped to 5-6 in the league and 7-7 overall.
“That’s only the second time on the whole schedule where we were not really in the game after the third inning,” Clearfield coach Sid Lansberry said.
The Bison stayed close early by matching the Golden Eagles’ two runs in the first inning.
Caullin Reed walked and stole second and stopped at third when Nate Barr singled for a 10-game hitting streak. After Barr stole second, Eli Glass belted a sacrifice fly to center field for one run and Allan Myers singled for an RBI.
Cade Walker walked the bases full in the second, and Rodney Shultz gave Tyrone (14-2) the lead for good with a sac fly.
The visitors made it 7-2 in the fourth, filling the sacks again on two walks and a single by Shultz and getting RBIs from Kevin Lehner with a sac fly, Cory Lehman with the second of his three run-scoring doubles and winning pitcher Matt Savino with a suicide squeeze bunt. One run scored on a Bison misplay.
“When you get down like that, it’s tough to come back,” Lansberry said. “Cade was a little bit wild, and that’s a good hitting team, tough to pitch against. That’s why they’re tied for first place.”
Not any more, for the Golden Eagles are sitting alone atop the league at 9-2 because Bald Eagle Area knocked off Philipsburg-Osceola 7-3 Tuesday.
Clearfield got one run back in the lower fourth on Harrison Peacock’s double and Hayden Williams’ single, but Tyrone responded with another four-run salvo off reliever Hunter Hipps in the fifth.
Lehner doubled, Lehman lofted a sac fly, Brandon Lucas singled and, after Peacock came on in relief, Aden Coleman walked with the bases loaded for the RBIs.
A single by Shultz and back-to-back doubles by Lehman and Lucas in the sixth set up the early finish before Williams relieved to get the final two outs.
“We had to use some guys who haven’t pitched that much this year, so that’s what happens,” Lansberry said. “We’ve just got to get ready for Friday and try to right the ship.”
The Bison will be out to climb back above .500 against Penns Valley at Spring Mills.
Lehman led Tyrone with four RBIs, Lucas had three and Lehner had two as the trio combined for seven hits. Savino worked four innings for the win, and Coleman pitched two scoreless innings in relief.
On the positive side for Clearfield, Peacock cracked two hard hits, Hunter Dixon singled for his first varsity hit and freshman infielder Kyle Elensky worked three walks in his first varsity start.
Mountain League standings — Tyrone 9-2, Philipsburg-Osceola 8-3, Bellefonte 7-4, Clearfield 5-6, Penns Valley 5-6, Bald Eagle Area 3-8, Huntingdon 3-8.
