DUBOIS — Sophomore Zane Morgan (Clearfield) raised his average 10 points to .410 with three singles in six at-bats for Penn State DuBois last week.
He had one hit and was hit by a pitch and went on to score two runs in a 5-4 loss at Penn State Mont Alto that dropped the Lions to 10-2 in the Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference West Division, which is good for a 1½-game lead going into this week’s important series with Penn State Beaver.
The Lions need to win two of their final three conference games to claim the division title and a bye for the opening round of the PSUAC Playoffs Thursday. If unsuccessful, they’ll host Penn State Greater Allegheny for a berth in the semifinals Sunday, May 5, at Showers Field.
Morgan had a pair of hits in a 5-2 home loss to Point Park Sunday.
Freshman Jake Sorbera (Clearfield) was handed his first loss when the visitors scored four runs, two earned, off him after he relieved in the sixth inning. He allowed two hits and one walk around two outs.
In the opener of that non-conference doubleheader, junior Brandon Orsich (Clearfield) was the starting pitcher and gave up four hits and three runs in one inning.
Sophomore Thayne Morgan (Clearfield) scored one run as the Lions came back to triumph 8-5.
Penn State DuBois, which dropped from third to fifth in last week’s United States Collegiate Athletic Association Poll, is 21-10 overall.
Orsich is 6-0 and leads the Lions in wins as well as starts (9) and complete games (3). He has pitched 36 innings with a 2.75 earned run average, 15 strikeouts, six walks and four hit batsmen. He had surrendered 39 hits and 11 runs.
Thayne Morgan is tops in batting average (.439), runs (22) and stolen bases (18) and second in hits (29) in 28 games. He has driven in 10 runs.
Zane Morgan is third in batting (.410), third in runs (20), third in stolen bases (8) and tied for third in hits (25) in 24 games.
Sorbera (1-1) owns a 3.32 ERA for 19 innings in 11 relief appearances. He has struck out eight, walked eight, hit one batter and allowed 17 hits and 10 runs, seven earned.
In the USCAA stats, Orsich is tied for third in wins and ranks 13th in ERA, while Thayne Morgan is fifth in steals and 12th in hitting and Zane Morgan is tied for 21st in batting.

MOOSIC — Sidelined more than six weeks because of an injury, freshman Bryce Timko (Curwensville) returned to action and pitched one scoreless inning in Lackawanna College’s 18-1 win over Raritan Valley (N.J.) Community Saturday at PNC Field, home of the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Railriders, the New York Yankees’ affiliate in the Class AAA International League Northern Division.
Timko struck out two of the three batters he faced as the Falcons completed a sweep that clinched a berth in the National Junior College Athletic Association Region XIX Division II Tournament.
The Falcons (18-12) are in third place at 5-3.
Timko has pitched 6-1/3 innings in four appearances with three strikeouts and three walks. He has given up eight hits and six runs.

MONT ALTO — Senior Jon Janocko (Clearfield) made his seventh mound appearance for Juniata in a 14-8 non-conference win over Penn State Mont Alto last Tuesday.
He walked one batter and hit another while giving up two hits and two runs.
Janocko is 0-1 with three strikeouts and eight walks in six innings of work.
The Eagles are 10-20 with a 1-12 Landmark Conference record.

WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
LEWISBURG — Senior Sarah Lash (Clearfield) hurled the javelin a season-best 36.98 meters (121 fee, 4 inches) to earn fourth-place points for St. Francis at the Bucknell Team Challenge Saturday.
The Red Flash finished fourth in the eight-team meet with 86.50 points.

MEN’S TRACK & FIELD
SLIPPERY ROCK — Sophomore Ethan McGinnis (Clearfield) tied for fourth place in the high jump by clearing 1.78 meters (5 feet, 10 inches) at the Slippery Rock Open Thursday.
He also placed ninth in the triple jump at 12.56 meters (41-2½).
