HYDE — Caullin Reed enjoyed a career day in fronting a 16-hit attack that, coupled with 12 walks, enabled the Clearfield Area High School baseball team to defeat Brookville 22-12 in six innings at the Bison Sports Complex Tuesday.
Reed doubled his season total of hits with a home run, a double and three singles in six trips to the plate.
The junior shortstop also drove in five runs and scored four runs.
“Caullin had a super day,” Bison coach Sid Lansberry said, “but a lot of other guys stepped up and had good days, too. It was good to see them put it all together like that.”
Contributions were made throughout the lineup as Cade Walker and Nick Domico socked pairs of doubles and logged three RBIs apiece, Eli Glass cracked three singles and had two RBIs and Nate Barr added two hits and three RBIs. All four crossed the plate at least twice.
Gusting winds and bright sunshine made it an adventure for flychasers on every high ball to the outfield, but both teams had troubles making routine plays, too, as they combined for 11 errors.
“It was not a well-played high school game by either team, and I’m sure the other coach would say the same,” Lansberry said. “The conditions made it tough for the outfielders. It’s a tough field to play on when it’s sunny and windy.
“Luckily, we had a lot of hits. It’s good to be back above .500.”
The Bison had to come from behind twice to pad their record to 4-3, breaking the non-league game open with 10 runs, all earned, in the fifth inning.
Brookville (2-3) broke on top 2-0 in the first on a run-scoring single by starting pitcher Jace Miner and the first of two sacrifice flies by Cole LaBenne, but Clearfield immediately answered with a three-spot.
Barr picked up an RBI with a groundout after Reed led off with a single and continued to third on a misplay. With two outs, Walker clubbed a wind-aided double to deep center to drive in Glass and Hayden Williams, who were aboard via singles.
The Raiders came right back to grab an 8-3 lead in the top of the second as Aaron Park drilled a double to left center for three of the six runs, only half charged to Hunter Hipps as earned because of three Bison errors.
Again, the Bison responded with three runs on RBI grounders by Barr and Allan Myers and one of Brookville’s five miscues.
Down 9-6 in the lower third, Clearfield drew even against Chase Palmer, the second of six Brookville hurlers. An error got the rally started, and the Bison cashed in three unearned runs on Domico’s double behind third base and Glass’ line single to right field.
Harrison Peacock was working in relief for the Bison when the Raiders reclaimed the lead at 12-9 with two tainted runs in the fourth inning and another in the fifth.
However, the Bison not only took him off the hook but also made him the winning pitcher with their big outburst during which they coupled six hits off Hunter Roney, Jamison Rhoades and Hunter Geer with seven free passes by the trio.
“That’s a pretty good offensive job, 10 earned runs in one inning,” Lansberry said.
Reed, one of four Bison to bat twice, drove in four of the runs by walloping a homer over the left center fence and ripping a double to right field.
Clearfield made it a Mercy Rule finish with three runs in the sixth.
Walker doubled to deep left and scored on an error that allowed Peacock to reach base. Kyle Elensky walked for the third time ahead of Reed’s RBI infield single.
Following the final Raider pitching change, Barr lashed a long single to left center to end the 2½-hour contest.
Peacock went 3-1/3 innings to notch the win, allowing three hits and the three unearned runs while striking out three.
Walker came on to get the last outs on three pitches in the top of the sixth.
“Peacock threw really well for his first varsity win,” Lansberry said. “That was a bright spot. We put in Cade because Harrison said his back was bothering him.
“It was good not having to use Cade earlier, because we wanted to have him ready for Central. They’ve always been a tough team for us to beat especially down there, and they beat Altoona 7-1 Sunday in the finals of the Curve Classic.”
The Bison will make the trip to Martinsburg Thursday for the Mountain League game.
