Legislation aimed at helping firefighters who purchase their own equipment
HARRISBURG – In an effort to support Commonwealth firefighters, Rep. Clint Owlett (R-Tioga/Bradford/Potter) earlier this week introduced legislation to help those volunteers who pay for firefighting equipment out of pocket.
“It can never be stressed enough that we have fewer and fewer men and women volunteering to serve as firefighters in our local communities,” said Owlett.
“It is a service that demands a great deal of sacrifice and training and the companies themselves continue to face financial challenges.
“These financial challenges are what lead the dedicated men and women we do have to sometimes purchase their own gear.
“Although their commitment to service is to be commended, I don’t think they should have to purchase the equipment needed to perform their duties and keep them safe.”
House Bill 376 would enact a tax credit of up to $500 for volunteers who purchase firefighting equipment using their own money.
This tax credit would provide financial assistance to those volunteers who spent their own hard-earned money in order to purchase supplies that are designed to protect them.
“Being a volunteer firefighter is one of the most selfless things anyone can do,” said Owlett.
“Providing financial assistance to these volunteers is one way in which we can show our appreciation to these special citizens and hopefully entice new individuals to join.”
House Bill 376 has been referred to the House Finance Committee.
