HYDE – The Clearfield Bison boys basketball team turned the tables on visiting Penns Valley Friday night at the Bison gym, winning 56-38 to pick up its tenth win of the season in the Mountain League game.
Penns Valley defeated the Bison earlier, in January, on the Rams’ home court 59-47.
But on this night it was great Clearfield defense, along with unselfishness and hustle that led the way to victory.
Karson Rumsky connected on a three pointer with 3:40 to play in the first quarter that gave the Bison a 7-2 edge before the Rams put four on the board before the first buzzer sounded.
Penns Valley took an 11-9 lead on a Logan Snyder basket early in the second period. That lead was the last one the Rams would see on the evening.
Bison Cade Walker took over for awhile from there, scoring five straight points and giving Clearfield a 14-11 margin which it stretched the lead to 20-13 at the halftime break.
Walker had nine second quarter points on a night were he was the game’s high scorer with 18.
Clearfield really took charge of the battle by outscoring the Rams in the third quarter 19-7, and actually had a
28-9 run from when the score was all knotted at 11 each back in the second frame.
The Rams tried to cut the Clearfield lead, 39-20 after three, in the fourth, but went toe-to-toe trading buckets and could only shave one point off of the Bison margin.
The Bison picked up 16 points from Rumsky and 10 from Taye Lynch to help Walker with the offensive load for Clearfield.
Penns Valley had Cameron Shaffer net 13 tallies on the evening.
Assistant coach Donnie Shimmel coached the Bison on the night in the absence of head coach Nate Glunt.
Clearfield is now 10-9 overall on the season with a 5-7 Mountain league record.
The Rams won the junior varsity game, defeating Clearfield by a score of 49-45. High scorer for the Bison was Matt Pallo and Nick Ryan with 11 points each.
Clearfield travels to Central on Wednesday with the JV game starting at 6 pm and the varsity to immediately follow.
The Bison lost to Central the first time they played, at Clearfield on January 11, 53-44
