This picture was taken at the end of Turnpike Avenue in Clearfield, Lawrence Township.
This was where the Penfield Road began and the Snow Shoe-Packersville Turnpike continued up the Rockton Mountain to Rockton (Union Township), and Luthersburg and Liberty, both in Brady Township.
The signpost points the way to “Rocton.” The buggy sits on the road to Penfield. Both the turnpike and the Penfield Road were traveled by stages run by the Leavy Livery located in Clearfield.
People from DuBois commonly refer to this as the Clearfield Mountain. People in Clearfield call it the Rockton Mountain. It all depends upon which side you start from!
