CLEARFIELD – A Curwensville man who fled from police while in the possession of methamphetamine was sentenced to state prison Tuesday during plea and sentencing court.
Chancellor Michael Shaw, 24, pleaded guilty to felony counts of flight to avoid apprehension, and fleeing or eluding police, as well as recklessly endangering another person, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving under the influence of a controlled substance and traffic summaries.
Judge Paul E. Cherry sentenced him to four months to two years in state prison and two years concurrent probation.
For a prior terroristic threats case, his probation was revoked and he was given a consecutive sentence of six months to two years in state prison bringing his total sentence to 10 months to four years.
The new charges stem from an incident on March 11 after police who were watching a suspected drug house, spotted Shaw in a vehicle traveling on U.S. Route 322 in the Goldenrod area, according to previous reports.
When the officers got close to the vehicle on State Route 879, they activated their lights in an attempt to make a traffic stop.
Instead of stopping, the vehicle led them east as it ran other vehicles off the roadway.
The driver, later identified as Shaw, nearly collided with another vehicle as he passed another motorist on the Shawville-Croft Highway.
The vehicles sped along at times at over 80 miles per hour.
Eventually the two police cars were able to box the vehicle in on the Clearfield/Shawville Highway.
When they caught them, Shaw and the other man in the car refused to exit the vehicle.
Shaw actually tried to put the vehicle in reverse but was unable to move it backwards due to the police car being in the way.
The two men had to be removed from the car by the officers.
Shaw who had warrants for his arrest and had been on the run for a while showed signs of being under the influence of a controlled substance, police said.
The passenger, Romello Weber, 20 of Clearfield, was on probation.
Drug paraphernalia was in plain sight in the car.
In an interview with police, Shaw admitted to smoking meth all night and to purchasing more at the suspected drug house.
Weber was tested by a probation officer and found to also be under the influence of meth.
After receiving authorization to further search the vehicle, officers found digital scales with residue and a vial with three individually wrapped crystal rocks of meth.
A drug test revealed that Shaw was under the influence of amphetamine, methamphetamine and alprazolam.
Weber was also scheduled for sentencing Tuesday, but he withdrew his plea. Weber is charged with conspiracy/intentional possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
In a second case, Shaw pleaded guilty to a felony count of criminal trespass, possession of drug paraphernalia, and criminal mischief. For this he received a concurrent sentence of four months to two years in state prison.
According to that affidavit of probable cause, on Aug. 19, police were called to a possible residential burglary on Walton Street in Decatur Township.
When they arrived on the scene, Shaw was inside the home. He allegedly entered the locked residence by damaging a screen in a bedroom window. The residents confirmed that he was not permitted to be in their home.
Shaw was in possession of a small metallic container that had suspected methamphetamine residue in it. He told the troopers that he had injected the drug earlier in the day, according to the report
