The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is alerting regional drivers that an improvement project on Interstate 99 in Centre County will start on Tuesday, May 29.
The work zone encompasses a three-mile section of I-99 in College and Patton townships, between the Atherton Street exit and the bridges spanning the Bellefonte Trail near the Waddle Road interchange.
The goal of the project is to improve ride quality and extend the useful life of the roadway.
Initial work will consist of long-term closures of the north and southbound lanes as structure repair and rehabilitation is completed on the bridges. This phase is expected to be complete by July 2.
Once structure work is complete, nighttime milling and paving will take place on the northbound lanes from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. and on the southbound lanes from 8 p.m. – 6 a.m.
Short term lane closures will be in effect while this work is taking place. The roadway will remain open when work is not taking place.
Glenn O. Hawbaker Inc. of State College is the contractor for this $3.8 million project. All work is weather and schedule dependent. Work will be halted during the July 4 holiday and during the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts, July 12-15.
PennDOT reminds motorists to use caution when traveling through work zones, anticipate travel delays, obey posted speed limits and always buckle up.
