Laurence A. Hunter, 78, of Luthersburg died Thursday at home with his family after a 17-year battle with cancer.a
Mr. Hunter was born on March 9, 1932 in Olean, NY. He was the son of the late Laurence A. and A. Carolyn (Boser) Hunter.
He loved fishing, carpentry, oil painting, and his work as an auto mechanic. He will be sadly missed by his wife and family.
He graduated from Brookville High School in the class of 1950 and attended various classes at Penn State University. He then joined the United States Army in 1953, serving in the Korean War, where he received the Bronze Service Star, United Nations Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
Mr. Hunter married Betty L. Collins on Jan. 2, 1954 in Washington, D.C., where they made their home. He returned in 1968 and opened A&L Imports, a car repair business and eventually retired from Central Volkswagen.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years and four children, Cathy A. Striegel of Deltona, FL; Michael L. Hunter of Gettysburg; Jeffrey B. Hunter of Luthersburg; and Lisa D. Leonard of Bilger’s Rocks.
Mr. Hunter is also survived by four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; a sister, Shirley Mitchell of Fort Collins, CO; and a brother, George Hunter of Hinsdale, NY.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Robert and one infant son, Laurence.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date. There will be no public viewing. Arrangements are under the direction of the Goble-Baronick Funeral Home.
