CLEARFIELD – The speed limit near three Penns Valley Area School District buildings was recently reduced — just in time for the first day of school.Â
When students return to school Sept. 7, they will see the new speed limit of 35 miles per hour in the area of the Penns Valley Area high, intermediate and elementary schools. The posted limit in this area along state Route 45 in Penn Township, Centre County, had been 55 miles per hour. Â
PennDOT coordinated the change in cooperation with the school district, Penn Township and the Pennsylvania state police. Signs indicating the new 35 mile-per-hour speed limit are posted in the area of the schools.  Â
To raise awareness of the new speed limit, PennDOT District 2 placed a radar-controlled speed display sign near the buildings on the westbound side of SR 45.
The speed display sign will register the speeds of vehicles traveling along SR 45. The speed display sign uses radar to determine the rate of travel for oncoming traffic. The speeds of individual vehicles are posted on the lighted section of the sign.Â
The speed display sign will remain in place for approximately four weeks. The sign will then face the eastbound lane of Route 45 for about four weeks.Â
Motorists should be aware that this area is also a school zone, and during certain times of the day, the speed limit is further decreased to 15 miles per hour. The times of the 15 mile-per-hour limit are posted. Flashing yellow lights also alert motorists when the school zone speed limit is active. Failure to reduce speed in the school zone could result in a fine and points on the driver’s record.Â
PennDOT reminds motorists they can log on to 511pa.com or call 511 from any phone to check traffic conditions before heading out.
