CLEARFIELD – Four authors will visit the Shaw Public Library this summer and are targeted for middle school through the adult age category. Lucas Kriner, Georgia Anne Butler, Paula Bosco Damon, and PJ Piccirillo will be welcome visitors as part of the 2009 Adult Summer Reading Program, Master the Art of Reading.
Lucas Kriner will be the first author to visit the library. Originally, a native of the area, Kriner will share his book, “The Wisdom of Brisbin Mindstorm: The Red and White Baton” on June 16, beginning at 6:30 p.m. The program will consist of an introduction to the book that is followed by a meet and greet book signing. Books will be available for purchase at the event for those wishing to own a copy. The author is generously donating a portion of the sales to the library. For more information on the book please visit here.
The second author to visit Shaw Public Library is Georgia Anne Butler. On July 20, at 6:30 p.m., join Georgia Anne Butler, author of The Legend Awakes, Book I in the trilogy Of the Wing, for a workshop on how to start your first book. In a 45-minute presentation, Butler will demonstrate how to develop a book’s plot (major sequence of events) by adhering to three key principles: 1) Write from experience, 2) Write about conflict, and 3) Write on the point. After the workshop, she will be available to sign copies of her book. For more information on the book please visit here.
Paula Damon Bosco, formerly from Philipsburg, joins us for a program on August 18, which will also begin at 6:30 p.m. At the event, Bosco will read selections from her collection “Look-Don’t Look,” many of which centers on her experiences growing up in Philipsburg. Students and adults interested in writing and careers in writing are encouraged to attend.
The final author to visit this summer will be on August 26 with author, PJ Piccirillo, special event book discussion and author presentation. Joseph & Elizabeth Shaw Public Library, in association with the PA Partners in the Arts, will host a group discussion of the novel, Heartwood. Piccirillo, whose writing is rich in northern Appalachian character and landscape, will participate during part the group discussion. Copies of the book will be loaned free of charge to all who wish to participate. Heartwood is set in central Pennsylvania at the turn of the twentieth century. It draws from our early timbering, tanning, and carbon industries, as well as the social and economic history of our communities. As it contemplates our traditions, landscapes, livelihoods, and cultural and economic contributions, Heartwood provides unprecedented arts, educational and social opportunities. More information about the book is available at the publisher’s Web site.
The Shaw Public Library is open on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m., Wednesday and Friday from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.
