Edwin Charles Butterworth, Sr. passed away on August 13, 2010 at the Winds at Mattern Orchard, Duncansville, at the age of 82.
He was born August 2, 1928 in Chester Hill.
He attended the Trinity United Methodist Church as a youth and graduated from Philipsburg High School in 1946. Edwin met his wife, the former Jane Williams, while working at the General Cirgar factory. They married in 1951. After beginning his career as a boilermaker with the Pennsylvania Railroad, Edwin served in the Army Signal Corps stateside during the Korean War. Following military service, he returned to the Pennsylvania Railroad as a locomotive electrician. While with the railroad he was an active Union Shop Steward and Officer.
In the late 1960’s he graduated from the Pennsylvania State University Extension Program in Electrical Mining Machinery Repair and then briefly worked for the salt mining industry in Zanesville, OH. In 1970 he moved to Altoona where he continued to live after retiring from the railroad. He returned to his hometown area to live in Allport, PA for many years.
He is survived by five children, Edwin Butterworth Jr. of Alexandria, VA; Deborah Damerell of Fairfax, VA; Richard Butterworth of Lake Charles, Louisiana; Christine Hardesty of Round Hill, VA; Martin Butterworth of Harrisburg; twelve grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Steel Butterworth and Phoebe Eggeson Butterworth; his wife Jane; his brother Maxwell Steele Butterworth; an da sister Marjorie Butterworth.
Services will be held at the David K. Dahlgren Funeral Home, 228 N. Centre Street, Philipsburg. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 17 from 6-8 p.m.. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, August 18, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Allport Cemetery.
